To all whom it may coi/cerim- Beit known that I, CHRISTIAN GRUNDER, a
. citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stamp- I-Iolders, of which the following is a specification, reference bein-g had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in holders, and more` particularly to a holder for stamps, dies, and the like instruments.
/This invention has for its object the provision of a novel form of holder adapted to retain a plurality of stamps when not being used and adaptedA to firmly hold the stamps .in position upon apiece of work when they are being used.
Another object of this invention resides in the novel construction which I employ for producing a compact and useful device to be used by artisans. I vention aims to provide a holder which will -be extremely simple in construction, strong and durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and of a portable nature, which will assist and facilitate the rapid manipulation of the instruments contained within the i holder.

To put my invention into practice, I construct rny improved holder of a body portion 1, which is substantially rectangular incrosssection and oblong in top plan view. The
- top surface of the body portion is provided in its one end with a plurality of angularly- In thisv connection the in-` disposedapertures 2 2, which are preferably arranged in two rows parallel to the longitudinal edges of the body portion. The opposite endv of the body portion is provided with aplurality of vertically-disposed apertures 3 3, a portion of the length of each hole being beveled, as indicated at 4. Upon the bottom of the body portion is mounted a plate 5, that 'issecured to the body portion by screws 6 6. The end of the plate 5, extending beneath the apertures 3, is provided with a plurality of apertures 7, alining with the vertically-disposed apertures 3. The top surface of that end of the body portion containing the apertures y3 is provided with a metallic plate 8, having apertures 9 formed therein, alining withthe apertures 3 of the body portion 1. The end of the plate is bent downwardly, as indicated atV 8, to embrace the end of the body portion 1. This plate is secured to the body portion by suitable screws, and itis employed to protect the edges of the apertures 3, as well as to retainsprings 10 within said apertures.
The reference-numerals 1l 11 designate stamps adapted to be'carried by my improved holder, and in Fig. 1 of the drawings I have illustrated some of these stamps as being retained within the holder ready for use, while in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings the position of the stamps within their respective apertures Yis illustrated. It will be observed that when the stamps are not in use they are retained in the apertures 2 by the angular plate 5, and when they are to be used they are retained with the apertures 3 by the springs 10. The springs are adapted to engage the side of the stamps and hold them against the sides of the apertures, the one end of said springs being retained between the top surface of the body portion 1 and the bottom surface of the plate 8.
The device is provided with a suitable handle 12,- which is secured to the body portion 1 by suitable bolts and nuts 14, that may also serve to retain the plate 8 and the plate 5 in engagement with the body portion 1.
The manner of using a device constructed in accordance with my invention is as follows: It is a well-known fact that stamps and the like instruments are used for marking material, especially finished products, and considerable trouble has been experienced by artisans in properly holding the stamps relative to the piece of work to be stamped. inconvenience experienced by mechanics is occasioned by the stamps becoming hot and hard to handle and also by the stamps being mislaid among the numerous instruments used by mechanics. To overcome these objectionable features experienced in stamping materials, I employ my improved holder, which is adapted to retain a set or plurality of stamps whereby they cannot become separated or lost, and each stamp is adapted to be retained within the holder until it is desired to use the same. It having been determined what part of the piece of work is to be stamped, the stamps to be used are placed in the apertures 3 and the holder positioned directly above the place upon the piece of work which is to be stamped. The body portion 1 of the holder will always retain the stamps in a vertical position at right angles to the surface to beimpressed by said stamps, and the stamps so retained within the holder will not need any further manipulation while they are being struck with'a hammer or the like instrument to cause an impression to be made in the piece of work. This operation obviates the necessity of the workman using his hand to hold the stamps, it only being necessary to hold the holder upon the material while the stamps When the desired impressions have been made, the stamps are returned to their respective apertures in the opposite end of the holder.
In Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings I have illustrated a slight modification wherein a body portion 14 is employed having an integral handle 15, which is preferably formed at one end of the body portion. The body portion is similar to the body portion 1 heretofore described, with the exception that a single row of apertures 16 are employed, in which the stamps are adapted to be retained by springs 17 until they have been struck and a piece of material impressed with the character carried by the stamp.
.By providing angularly-disposed apertures for retaining the stamps when not in use the stamps will be prevented from jumping or becoming disengaged from their respective apertures, this being accomplished by the frictional engagement of the stamps against the sides of the apertures.
1t will be apparent to those skilled in mechanics that I have devised a novel form of tool-holder that obviates the necessity of tools being held in the hands of workmen while they are being used, thus eliminating the danger of injury that may occur by a foul or glancing blow upon the tools.
It is manifest that various changes may be made in the details of construction as will be permissible by the appended claims.
Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is@ I 1. A holder of the character described comprising a metallic body portion, plates carried by said body portion, said body portion and plates having a plurality of registering vertical openings formed therein, springs mounted in said openings, and a handle carried by said body portion, substantially as described.
2. A holder of the character described coinprising a body portion, a plate carried by the bottom of said body portion, a plate mounted upon top of said body portion at one end thereof, the ends of said body portion and said plates having a pluralityof registering vertical apertures formed therein, springs mounted in the apertures of one end of said body portion, a handle carried by said body portion, substantially as described.
3. In a holder of the character described,the combination, of a body portion, one end of said body portion having angularly-disposed apertures formed therein, the opposite end of said body portion having vertically-disposed apertures formed therein and extending` therethrough, with a handle carried by said body portion, and means to retain stamps within said apertures, substantially as described.
4. In a holder of the character descri bed,the combination, of a body portion, the one end of said body portion having angularly-disposed apertures formed therein, the opposite end of said body portion having verticallydisposed apertures formed therein, with a plate extending over the bottom of the body portion, said plate being provided with openings registering with the vertically-disposed apertures in the body portion and said plate covering the angularly-disposed apertures in said body portion and means for retaining stamps within said apertures, substantially as described.
5. A tool-holder comprising a body portion and a central handle, said body portion being formed with vertical apertures at one end extending through the body portion, and said body portion being formed with angularlydisposed apertures at the other end, said lastnamed apertures terminating above the bottom of the body portion.
