JOHN ARON LARSCN AND CARL AUGUST-BRAGE, OF STAMFORD, CON- NECTICUT.
CARPENTERS TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 12, 1905.
To cir/ZZ whom it may concern.:
Be it known that we, JOHN ARoN LARsoN and CARL AUGUST BRAGn,citizens of the United States, residing at Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Carpenters Tools, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to carpenters tools; and the object thereof is to provide a device of this class which may be used as a miter, circle-inscriber, square, rule, single or double gage, T-square, and for various other purposes; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a tool of the class specified constructed as herein described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated* by suitablereference characters in each of the views, and in whichd Figure l isa plan View of our improved tool; Fig. 2, a bottom plan View thereof; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l; Fig. 4, a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
ln the practice of our invention we provide a scale-bar a, having a triangular head portion provided with a straight face b2 and converging side or end portions 3, which form a right-angled apex 04 in line with the central line of the scale-bar a, and the head b is preferably composed of a transverse bar member b5, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, and a flat backwardly-directed member Z2 of much less thickness than the bar member b5 and the top surface of which is flush with the top surface of the scale-bar (t.
The scale-bar a is provided with a longitudinal central slot ft2, the under side of which is provided, in the opposite sides thereof, with longitudinal rabhet-grooves (t3, in which is mounted a slide c. having a screw-threaded shank c2, which passes upwardly through the slot a2 and is provided with a nut c3, and a Screw c't passes through the shank 02 and through the slide c and is provided at its upper end with a milled head c5, and mounted on the screw c1 isl a set-nut C, and the lower end of the screw c' is pointed, as shown at 07.
The bottom portion of the slot a2 in the scale-bar t extends backwardly through the cross-bar b5 of the head b and through the part of the head t, as shown at d, and the slot or opening d in the part of the head 5 opens upwardly through said slot by means of a slot or opening (Z2, and mounted in the slot or opening l is a supplemental slide e, provided at its rear end with a screw e2, which passes upwardly through the slot or, opening cl2 and is provided with a vthumb-and-linger set-screw e3, and the front end of the slide e is provided with a depending' pin, point, or tooth et, which serves as a gage device in gaging lumber land for similar purposes, and the lower end c7 of the screw ol also serves as a gage devicel in gaging lumber, and passing downwardly through the part of the head is a screw f, the lower end of which is pointed, as shown at f2, and said screw is provided above the head b with a set-nut f3, and the screw f also passes through the supplemental slide e.
The outer end of the scale-bar c is provided with a knob or handle g, and the operation of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof. rlhe upper side of the scale-bar ct is provided with a scale It adjacent to the slot or opening a2, and this scale serves as means for regulating the position of the slide c and also the slide e when desired in the operation of gaging lumber, and by means of the scale /t the. position of the slide o may be regulated, so as to form a circle of any desired diameter, the pointed end Aof the screw f serving as a pivot on which the device is turned and which. fixes the center of the circle.
The front side of the bar b5 is provided with a recess c', adapted to receive the pin or tooth e4 on the slide e when said slide is moved to the limit of its backward movement, and in gaging lumber the cross-bar b5 is placed against the side of a piece of lumber to be gaged, and either the slide e or c may be used for singlegaging or both of said slides may be used for double-gaging.
It will' also be seen that our improved tool may be used in the manner of aT-square and for the purpose of forming right angles and for various other purposes hereinbefore specified, and the scale-bar c may be provided with other scales, if desired, and be made to serve as a rule for any purpose, and in the construction shown the scale /t is placed both on the top and bottom of said bar.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A tool of the class described, comprising a scale-bar provided at one end with a crosshead having a backwardly-directed extension, said scale-bar being provided with a longitudinal slot or opening which extends partially through said cross-head, a slide mounted in the slot or opening in the scale-bar, a supplemental slide mounted inthe extension of said slot or opening in the cross-head, said firstnamed slide being provided with a point, and the supplemental slide being also provided with a point both of which are directed downwardly, means for holding the slide in the desired position, and the supplemental slide, and a screw passing centrally and downwardly through the cross-head and through the supplemental slide and provided at its lower end with a point, substantially as shown and described.
2. A tool of the class described, comprising a scale-bar provided at one end with a crosshead having a backwardly-direeted extension, said scale-bar being provided Vwith a longitudinal slot or opening which extends partially through said cross-head, a slide mounted in the slot or opening in the scale-bar, a supplemental slide mounted in the extension of said slot or opening in the cross-head, said lirstnamed slide being provided with a point, and the supplemental slide being also provided with a point both of which are directed down'- wardly, means for holding the slide in the desired position, and the supplemental slide, and a screw passing centrally and downwardly through the cross-head and through the supplemental slide and provided at its lower end with a point, the said scale-bar being provided adjacent to the slot or opening therein with a scale, substantially as shown and described.
3. A tool of the class described, comprising a scale-bar provided at the one end with acrosshead having a baclzwardly-directed extension, said scale-bar being' provided with a longitudinal slot or opening which extends partially through said cross-head, a slide mounted in the slot or opening in the scale-bar, a supplemental slide mounted in the extension of said slot or opening in the crosshead,'said firstnamed slide being provided with a point, and the supplemental slide being also provided with a point both of which are directed downwardly, means for holding the slide in the desired position, and the supplemental slide, and
Aa screw passing centrally and downwardly through the cross-head and through the supplemental slide and provided at its lower end with a point, the said scale-bar being provided adjacent to the slot or opening therein with a scale, and the cross-head being provided with right-angled sides which meet in line with the central line of the scale-bar, substantially as shown and described.
4. A tool of the class described, comprising a scale-bar provided at one end with a crosshead, said scale-bar being provided with a central longitudinal slot or opening which extends backwardly into the cross-head, aslide mounted in the slot orv opening in the scale-bar.l a supplemental `slide mounted in that part of said slot or opening which extends into the cross-head, both of said slides being provid ed with downwardly directed points, and the cross-head being provided with a screw which passes downwardly therethrough adjacent to the end of the scale-bar and through the supplemental slide, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we have signed our names, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 10th day of May, 1905.
