R. P. BENEDICT. MUSIC LEAF TURNER.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 2a, 1905.
INVENTOR flTTOR-MEY.
R- K O a- 'of metal UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1, 1906.
Application filed November 23, 1905. Serial No. 288,649.
To ctZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROY P. BENEDICT, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Music-Leaf Turners, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
' This invention relates to a device which is adapted to be attached to music-leaves to facilitate the turning of the same, and is particularly designed to be used on sheets of music when held by a rack and which is especially useful for music-sheets placed upon the rack of a piano.
The main object of the invention is to provide a simple, convenient, and inexpensive device which can be readily applied to the leaf and removed therefrom without injury to the leaf and at the same time shall be free from liability of marring or otherwise defacing the polished surface of piano-rackwh'en the music is placed thereon.
To this end the invention consists in the novel construction of the leaf-turner hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a series of music-leaves each of which is provided with a turning device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detached face view of the leaf-turner of the preferred form. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the same, and Fig. 4 is a detached face view of a modified form of the said leaf-turner.
Similar letters of reference sponding parts.
A A A denote portions of music-leaves which may be either in the so-called sheetmusic form or bound in book form.
My leaf-turner consists of a thin plate B, which may be composed of any suitable kind or other material. I prefer, however, to employ aluminium in order to render the device very light in weight. This plate may also be of any convenient shape and is preferably provided with rounded corners to guard against tearing the leaf in applying the device thereto. This plateis prov'ided with spring-tongues a a, disposed above the plane of one face of the plate and parallel thereto, between which tongues and plate the outer marginal portion of the leaf is inserted and firmly gripped. The said tongues are preferably formed by first providing the plate with transverse slits disposed in pairs and extending part way toward the edges thereof indicate correand meeting at one end and then striking up the portions intervening the slits, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. However, these tongues maybe struck up from the-top and bottom marginal portions of the plate by slitting the plate, as shown in Fig. of the drawings, or they may be otherw se produced. The said plate B is provided at its outer edge with'a thumb-piece consisting of a lip b, bent upwardly at right angles thereto and deflected outwardly, as indicated at b, and terminating in lateral extensions 0 0, disposed parallel with said edge, as more clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. By forming the thumb-piece in this manner a leaf can be conveniently turned without liability of disturbing an underlying leaf.
To revent marring of the polished surface 0 a piano-rack by contact of the thumbpiece therewith when a leaf is turned, I provide this thumb-piece with a guard consisting, preferably, of a soft-rubber band d, stretched lengthwise of the extensions 0 c and sustained thereon by providing the ends of said extensions with notches e e, in which the band is seated.
It is obvious that the described device can be readily applied to and removed from the leaf without liability of tearing or defacing the same.
It will be understood that in employing a number of these devices they are to be arranged one above another on the successive leaves, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
What I claim as my invention is 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a paper-leaf attachment consisting of a plate formed with leaf-gripping tongues struck up from one face of the plate and extending 1parallel thereto toward one edge of the p ate, and the opposite edge of the plate provided with an upwardly and outwardly bent lip to produce a thumb -piece as set forth and shown.
2. The combination with the leaf, of a turning device composed of a plate provided with tongues, between which tongues and plate the marginal portion of theleaf is inserted, the outer edge of the plate being formed with an upwardly and outwardly deflected lip serving as a thumb-piece, and a surface-protecting guard consisting of a rubber band applied to said lip as set forth.
3. The combination with the leaf, of a turning device composed of a plate detachably applied to the marginal portion of the leaf and formed at its outer edge with a thumb-piece consisting of an upturned lip deflected outwardly and terminating in lateral extensions, and a surface protecting guard consisting of a rubber band stretched around said extensions as set forth.
4. The combination with the leaf, of a turning device composed of a plate detachably applied to the marginal portion of the leaf and formed with a thumb-piece provided with notched portions, and a surface-protecting guard consisting of a non-metallic band attached to said notched portions as set forth.-
5. The combination with the leaf, of a turning device composed of a plate detachably applied to the marginal portion of the leaf and provided with a thumb-piece consisting of a lip projecting from the outer edge of the plate and formed with lateral extensions having notched ends, and a surface- 20 protecting guard consisting of a rubber band passing around said extensions and seated in the notches thereof as set forth.
6. The combination with the leaf, of a turning device composed of a plate formed with tongues, between which tongues and plate the marginal portion of the leaf is inserted, and formed at its outer edge with a lip terminating in lateral extensions having notched ends, and a surface-protecting guard consisting of a rubber band passing lengthwise around said extensions and seated in the notches thereof as set forth.
ROY P. BENEDICT.
