To all whom it may 00ncern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. RHO ES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Steubenville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Ties and Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in metallic ties and railfasteners; and the invention has for its object to provide a durable and inexpensive tie wherein positive and reliable means are employed for firmly retaining a rail upon said tie. To this end I have devised a tie that can be easily rolled, the tie being of such a shape as to eliminate any possibility of the same being laterally displaced when mounted in a well-ballasted road-bed. The tie con- .stitutes a portion of the railfastener,the reforming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspectiye view of one end of my improved tie, illustrating a rail secured thereto by my fastener. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a rail-fastener. Fig. 4 is a similar view of a locking-yoke used in connection with the fastener. Fig. 5 is a plan of a portion of the tie. Fig. 6 is a bottom plan of a portion ,of the tie. My improved tie constitutes a rolled T- shaped bar 1, the horizontal portion or top 2 of which is slightly curved, while the depending flange 3 is tapered. In some instances this flange can be undulating, as at 4, (see Fig. 9,) to take a more positive grip in the road-bed upon which it is placed.
The tie adjacent to each end is provided with a raised portion forming a seat 5 for a rail 6.? The seat 5 upon each side of the Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a stir-' flange 3 is cut and sheared, as at 6, to form two lugs 7, which are bent to form fasteners for the base-flange 8 of the rail 6.
The seat 5 opposite the lugs 7 and upon each side of the flange 3 is provided with oblong openings 9, the under side of the top 2 at one side of each opening being beveled, as at 10, the object of which will presently appear.
Straddling the material between the openings 9 and the flange 3 is a stirrup 11, comprising a head 12, a neck portion 14, and depending hook-shaped legs 15. The legs 15 engage the outer edges 16 of the opening 9, and the head 12 serves a function which will presently appear.
In the curved portions 17 of the openings 9 are mounted fasteners 18, each fastener comprising an oval or eccentric shank 19, having arms 20 and 21 formed at right angles to said shank. The underneath surface of the arms 22 is beveled, as at 22 to engage the base-flange 8 of the rail 6. The arms 21 are adapted to engage the beveled surfaces 10 at the sides of the openings 9.
To .retain the fasteners 18 in engagement with the tie 1 and the rail 6, I use a lockingyoke 23, the edges of the jaws 24 of said yoke being formed with inner serrated edges 25 and outer tapering edges 26.
Before placing the rail 6 upon the top 2 of the tie the fasteners 18 are placed in the openings 9 9, said fasteners being turned whereby the arms of said fasteners will not interfere with the placing of the rail upon a tie. After the rail has been properly positioned in engagement with the lugs 7 7 the fasteners 18 are rotated until the arms 22 engage the basefiange 8 of the rail 6, and then the stirrup 11 and the locking-yoke 23 are placed inposition. The locking-yoke is adapted to embrace the neck portion 14 of the stirrup beneath the head 12, the jaws 24 of said yoke passing between the stirrup and the fasteners 18. The beveled edges 26 of the yoke are adapted to force the arms 22 of the fasteners outwardly into engagement with the base-flange of the rail 6. The locking-yoke as it is driven inwardly toward the rail becomes fixed upon the stirrup ITO When the locking-yoke is driven inwardly to partially rotate the fasteners 18, the "oval or eccentric shank 19 of each fastener forces the base-flange 8 of the rail 6 toward the lugs 7 7, while the arms 21 of said fasteners firmly lock the base-flange 8 of the rail 6 upon the tie by virtue of the beveled surface 10, formed adjacent to the openings 9 9 upon the under face of the tie 1.
The fasteners, stirrup, and locking-yoke are constructed of strong and durable metal, the locking-yoke being preferably made from sheetsteel, whereby it may ride upon the base-flange 8 of the rail 6 when driven inwardlyand may be easily severed at any time the rail 6 is to be removed.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
1-. In a metallic tie, and rail-fastener, the combination with a rail, of a T-shaped bar having its top raised to form a seat for said rail, lugs carried by said tie, and adapted to form fasteners at one side of said rail, eccentric fasteners movably mounted in the top of said tie, and adapted to en age said rail, a stirrup d'eta'chably mounted in said tie, a locking-yoke embracing said stirrup and en gaging said fasteners, and means to lock said yoke in engagement with said stirrup and said fasteners, substantially as described.
2. In a metallic tie and rail-fastener, the combination with a rail, of a T-shaped bar adapted to support said rail, lugs carried by the top of said bar and forming fasteners at one side of said rail, eccentric fasteners mounted in said bar and adapted to engage said rail, a
, ssaesa stirrup mounted between said fasteners, means embracing said stirrup to lock thelastnamed fasteners in engagement with said rail, and means to lock the last-named means in engagement with said stirrup, substantially as described.
8. In a metallic tie and rail-fastener, the combination with a rail, of a T-shaped bar adapted to support said rail, fasteners carried by said bar and adapted to engage one side of said rail, detachable fasteners carried by said bar and adapted to engage the other side of said rail, arms carried by the last-named fasteners and adapted to overlie the flange of said rail, and means interposed between the last-named fasteners to lock said fasteners in engagement, with said rail, said means including a stirrup embraced by a locking-yoke, substantially as described.
4. In a metallic tie and rail-fastener, the combination with a rail, of a bar supporting said rail, fixed fasteners carried by said bar, and engaging one side of said rail, movable fasteners carried by said bar and engaging the other side of said rail, a locking-yoke mounted between said movable fasteners and holding said fasteners in engagement with said rail, and means to hold said locking-yoke between said fasteners, substantially as described.
