new and useful Improvements in Umbrella- Supports; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,-such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvementsin umbrella supporting attachments for vehicles.

The object of the invention is to provide an umbrella-support of this character which may be quickly and easily secured to the back of a seat or other part of a vehicle to support an umbrella over the same.

A further object is to provide an adjustable clamp or attaching device whereby said support maybe connected to various sizes or widths of seat-backs and means whereby an umbrella may be attached to said support at various angles.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed. I

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a buggy, show ing the application of the invention to the seat. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the support removed from the buggy, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view through the adjustable joint or umbrella-attaching device.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes a supporting-standard which is here shown and is preferably in the form of a flat right-arigularly bent bar, one end of which is forked or bifurcated, as shown at 2, said forked ends being provided with attaching-hooks 3. Secured to the back of the buggy-seat is an attaching-bar 4, which when the standard is applied theretois adapted to be engaged by the hooks 3.

Adjustably mounted upon the vertical portion of the standard 1 is a clamping-arm" 5,'said arm being provided with a set screw 6, by means of which the sameis held in an adjustable positionupon the standard 1. The clamping-arm 5 is preferably in the form of an obtuse angle, and in the lower forward end of the same is arranged a clampingscrew 7, said screw being provided on its inner end with an enlarged clamping head or block 8, adapted to be screwed into tight engagement with the front side of the seatback after the clamping-arm has been adjusted into tight engagement with the top of said back. By providing an attaching device such as herein described the supporting-standard 1 may be quickly and easily connected with seat-backs of various widths or with any other suitable part of a vehicle.

The upper forward end of the supportingstandard is turned or twisted to a position at right angles to the plane of the upper portion of the standard, and in said twisted end of the latter is formed a concave seat 9, in which is formed a centrally-disposed aperture 10. In the seat 9 is arranged an umbrella-attaching clamp 12, said clamp consisting of a clamping-ball 13, which is adapted to engage the seat 9and which is provided with a longitudinally-disposed aperture or bore adapted to aline with the aperture 10 in the end of the standard. The outer face ofthe ball 13 is provided with alined recesses or notches 14, which are adapted to be engaged by the staff of the umbrella, said stafi being held in said notches by means of a clampingbolt 15, having on its outer end a hookshaped head 16, which is engaged with said staif of the umbrella, the opposite threaded end of the bolt being projected through the alined apertures in the clamping-ball and the end of the standard and receives thereon a thumb-nut 17. Between the latter and the adjacent side of the standard is arranged a washer 18, as shown. After the staff of the umbrella has been arranged in the notches 14 and engaged by the hook-shaped head 16 of the bolt the ball is turned in one direction or the other to incline the umbrella to the desired position, after which the nut 17 is screwed up into tight engagement with the washer 18, thus securely clam ing the umbrella in the ball 13 and also hoIding the ball in place. By slightly loosening the nut 17 the ball may be turned with the seat 9 to change the position or angle of the umbrella. From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this, invention as defined by the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination With the wall of a vertical seat or the like, having an attaching-bar on one side thereof, an umbrella-support comprising a standard having devices at its ower end coacting with said attaching-bar to secure said standard thereto, a clampingarm adjustably connected to said standard and having a, clamping-screw to bear against the opposite. side of said wall from that. to which said attachingar is secured, and

means to secure an umbrella to the said standard, substantially as described.

An umbrellarsupport of the character described comprisinga right-angularly bent supporting-standard having a forked lower end, attaching-hooks formed on said forked end, an attaching-bar adapted to be secured to the back of a vehicle-seat to receive said hooks, a clamping-arm adjustably secured to said standard to coact with said attachinghooks, a clamping-screw arranged in said arm, said screw having an enlarged clamping block on its inner end, a seat formed on the u er end of said standard, and an adjustal lg umbrella-attaching clam arranged in said seat whereby an umbrel a may be supported at any desired angle, substantially as described.
