In .many instances it becomes necessary, or desirable to shift or move a considerable length of railway tracksidewise. This may occur in construction work, and as a particular example, it may he noted that in plants .for burning ballast in the'open air, such shiftingof along length of track may be necessary every day.-
The objects of the present invention are to provide means whereby such shifting or moving of the track may be done readily and economically by suitable machinery, thereby avoiding the larger. part of the manual labor heretofore required to do such work and also less- 'ening the time required. I accomplish these objects by means of the apparatus shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, 7 represents a car of any ordinary or preferred form of construction, for instance an ordinary fiat car, upon which is mounted a boom 8. This boom is preferably mounted so that it may be swung incither a vertical or a horizontal plane. For thisp'urpose it is rigidly secured to a cross beam 9, which is carried in bearings 10 and 11, and is braced-by a brace 1-2 reaching to one end of the beam. The bearings 10 and ll consist of straps which are bolted to the ear' and pass around the beam, the former is' only long enough to allow the beam to rotate therein when the boom is to be raised'or lowered, but it also acts as a-pivot to support the beam to allow for'the limitedhorizonlal swing ofthe boom. The other bearing, 11, is made considerably longer and not only allows the boom to be swung in a vertical plane, but also allows the; beam at sufiicient horizontal movement to accommodate the horizontal moveinent'of the boom. The beam is provided with bearing plates 13 where it engages with the strap 1.1, and' these plates are preferably provided with guide flanges 50.

This is boom which extends across the track and carries a wheel 22 which engages with the other rail, and which is held in Contact therewith by means of a suitable spring, such as the spring 23 which bears against the slidable bearing 24. In order to. raise and lower the boom 8, I have provided a rope or cable 25 which is attached to the outer end thereof and which runs up over a pulley or sheave '26 on a mast 27 and down to awinding drum 28. This drum is shown with a hand crank 29, but of course it may be driven by power in any well known way.
The boom is swung in a horizontal plane by means of a second rope or cable 30 which is also attached to the outer end thereof, but which passes around a pulley or sheave 31 in the outer end of the beam 9 and then to a piston rod 32 of a power cylinder 33 which is located on the car 7. This cylinder is providecl with steam from a boiler 34 through a pipe 35. The move ment of the piston is controlled by a three way valve 36 having a handle 37, and an exhaust outlet 38. Other means mayof course be used for swinging the be used in place of the powbr cylinder.
