Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN MoCoY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maysville, in the county of Banks and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Choppers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will onableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in cotton choppers and consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical device of this character in which the cutters may be readily adjusted to cut or block the cotton as may be desired.
The above and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which;-
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved cotton chopper; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view upon the plane indicated by the line 3 -3, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view showing a portion of the transverse beam of the chopper or blocker and two of its scrapers.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes a longitudinally extending draft beam having secured at its upper end handles 2 and adjacent to its front end upon its under side a transversely extending angular bar 3. This bar is bent adjacent to its center to provide the two outwardly and rearwardly diverging arms 4 and it is adjustably clamped upon the beam 1 by means of two U-shaped bolts or clips 5. These U-shaped bolts 5 are arranged upon opposite sides of the beam 1 and have their upper, threaded ends passed through apertured plates 6 arranged transversely upon the top of the beam 1. Nuts 7 upon the threaded ends of the bolts 5 securely clamp the bar 3 upon beam 1, but to prevent slipping of the former upon the latter, I also preferably provide diagonal braces 8. The latter have their inner apertured ends 9 crossing each other beneath the beam 1 and secured thereto by a bolt or the like 10 passed vertically through the beam and the apertures in the braces. The outer ends of the braces 8 are curved or bent outwardly as shown atlO and are securely clamped beneath the plates 11 of U-shaped clips or bolts 12 arranged upon the arms 4 of the bar 3. These clips or clamps 12 are arranged at suitable intervals along said arms 4 and are adapted to adjustably secure thereon a plurality of standards 13, which are made of resilient metal and carry upon their lower ends scraper blades 14.
As shown, each of the standards 13 is in the form of a flat, resilient metal bar curved longitudinally and having its upper forward end passed between one of the plates 11 and the top of one of the arms 4 and it is then bent downwardly as shown at 15 to engage the front edge of said arm.
The lower rear end of each of the standards 13 is formed with a slot 16, as shown in Fig. 2, to receive a bolt 17 which adjustably clamps the scraper 14 upon said standard. While thescrapers 14 may be of any desired form and construction, I preferably make them as shown in the drawing and arrange the standards 13 in pairs so that the scrapers of each pair overlap each other-as will be seen upon reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings. It will be understood however, that the standards and scrapers may be arranged in any other suitable manner according to the work it is desired the implement to perform, since each of Saidstandards' is independently adjustable upon the arms of the bar 3. Also arrangedupon the arms 4 are clips or clamps 18 which are similar to the devices 12 and are adapted to clamp upon the said arm, the bent ends 19 of forwardly extending links 20. The latter have their hooks or eyes at their forward ends engaged with apertures in the outer ends of two draft bars 21. These bars have their inner ends which cross each other beneath the beam 1, adjustably secured thereto by a vertically extending bolt or the like 22 which passes through an opening in the beam 1 and the alinin g openings 23 formed in said bars 21. The outer ends of the bars 21 are reduced and bent to form spiral hooks or eyes 24 to which may be attached suitable connections for the draft animal or animals.
A ground wheel 25 is journaled between two vertical arms 26 which have their upper ends adjustably secured upon the opposite sides of the beam adjacent to its front end. The adjustable mounting for the arms or standards 26 is preferably effected by forming in their upper portions longitudinally extending slots 27 to receive transverse belts or the like 28 passed through the openings of the beam 1, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. By adjusting this standard it will be seen that the scrapers may be caused to enter the ground to a greater orless extent, as desired.
The construction, use, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. I
It will be seen that by adjusting the clip or clamps 12 upon the arms of the beam 3 the scrapers may be arranged in pairs or singly at any desired distance apart according to the space it is desired to leave be tween the cotton plants.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. A cotton chopper comprising a beam, an angle bar disposed transversely on said beam and having outwardly and rearwardly diverging arms, clips for clamping said bar upon said beam, standards having bent ends to engage said arms, clips for clamping said standards upon said arms, scrapers carried by said standards, and a ground Wheel for said beam.
2. A cotton chopper comprising a beam, an angle bar disposed transversely on said beam andhaving outwardly and rearwardly diverging arms, clips for clamping said bar upon said beam, standards having bent ends to engage said arms, clips for clamping said standards upon said arms, scrapers carried by said standard, a ground Wheel for said beam, and braces having their outer ends-engaged with said clips and their inner ends connected to'said beam.
3. A cotton chopper comprising a beam, an angle bar disposed transversely on said beam and having outwardly and rearwardly diverging arms, clips for clamping" said bar upon said beam, standards-having bent ends to engage said arms, clips for clamping said standards upon said arms, scrapers carried by said standards, a ground Wheel adjustably mounted upon said beam, braces for said arms having their inner ends adjustably secured to said beam and their outer open ends engaged with said clips, draft bars adjustably connected to said beam, links connectedto said draft bar, and clips for connecting said links to said arms.
