Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1907.
Application filed November 8, 1906. Serial No. 342,562.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH'A. Dm'rz', a citizen of the United States, residing at Kersey, in the county of Elk and State of Pennsylvania, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Insect-Traps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in what may be termed fly-traps, although adapted to entrap any kind of insects. Its objects are to readily accomplish the aforesaid purposes in a simple, economic and effective or satisfactory manner, and to these ends it consists of certain structural features or instrumentalities substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and specifically pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of my inventionFigure 1 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section thereof. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the invention.
In the disclosure of my invention, I provide a suitable inclosure or cage 1 comprised of a preferably rectangular frame 2 with a suitable slidable bottom 3 for the ready removal of accumulations and cleaning of the cage or trap, said frame having applied or fixed thereto at its sides, ends and top, wire- cloth 4, 5, 6 designating the same at those points, as readily noted. Said wire-cloth end, side and top portions or panels, are each subdivided or formed, of two members or sections, the opposed edges of the sections of said panels being spaced apart as at 7, 8, and 9 respectively, form ing thereby longitudinal or horizontal narrow openings or passages for the flies or insects; also at the bottom or lower edges of the end and lateral panels are additional like openings or passages 10, 11. Along the edges of the intermediate or middle entrances or openings of the end and lateral panels, the wire-cloth sections are inturned or extended horizontally inward some distance as at 12, 13; also along the upper edges of the bottom or lower openings or entrances of the same panels as also along the upper inner edges of the lateral and end pieces of the frame 2 are suitably fixed in position inward extended or horizontal strips of wire- cloth 14, 15; the latter, together with said inturned wirecloth portions, thus forming guards for said openings or passages as against the return of the entrapped flies or insects through the latter, as will be readily noted.
Superposed with relation to the cage 1, is a compartment-cage or annex 16, preferably of the outline, as disclosed, the same comprising end-pieces 17, of practically triangular form, secured to, and having arranged between them longitudinal lateral pieces 18; the top portion or roof proper 19 being formed of wirecloth suitably laid upon, and secured to the upper edges of said end-pieces and to said lateral pieces, along their outer surfaces. The bottom of said annex or cage 16 designated as 20, and which is also of wire- Cloth, is arranged within the plane thereof and formed in two sections or panels 21 with the Wire-cloth of their opposed longitudinal edges extended upward as at 22 and united along certain portions thereof but with their central portions spread apart and forming an upward entrance-passage 23 to the annex or compartment cage 16. Said sections are oppositely inclined from each other, being only of such inclination or rise, however, as to direct the movement of the flies or insects upward and centrally of the cage or trap, toward and through the entrance-passage 23 thereof, for entrapping or imprisoning the flies or insects which may pass from the primary cage 1, through the longitudinal opening or passage 9 between the wire-cloth sections or panels 6 forming the top of said primary cage. In one endpiece of the trap or cage 16 is provided an opening 24 covered by a pivoted flap or valve 24 for the delivery or release therefrom of the captured flies or insects when it may be desired to destroy or otherwise dispose of them. Said roof-like constructed cage or annex 16 is held, as against displacement, and yet removably in position upon the primary cage 1 by means preferably of upstanding wire-rods 25 suitably fixed in place to the lateral edges of the upper end-pieces of the cage 1, said cage or annex 16 having keeper or eye forming strap-plates 27 secured to its end-pieces, upon their outer surfaces, receiving said upstanding wire-rods 25 for the effective retention thereof upon the latter, and which will permit of the ready lifting of said cage 16 off the same when required, and the ready replacement thereof after such removal, as will be readily appreciated.
When it may be desired to remove compartmentcage or annex 16 from cage proper 1 for emptying it, the passage or exit 9 in the latter may be closed or covered in any suitable way as by placing over said exit or passage a strip of suitable material which may be fixed flexibly to the cage proper 1. Said cage proper 1, with its compartment-cage or annex 16, may be suitably disposed at any required point for entrapping the flies or insects, as in a window, with the lower sash raised, or other point of congregation of the flies &c., the operation of entrapping or capturing the latter being apparent.
I claim- 1. A device of the character described, embracing a cage proper equipped with entrance-openings, and an annex superposed with relation to the aforesaid cage and having its bottom formed of oppositely inclined sections, with their meeting edges terminating in upstanding portions having formed therebetwecn an upward passage leading into said annex, said cage proper having a passage in its top opening into the latter.
2. A device of the character described, embracing a cage proper having entrance-openings, and an annex provided with keepers and having its bottom formed of oppositely and upwardly inelined-sections with adjacent upstanding 1O edges eifective to form an upward passage, said cage proper having a passage in its top opening into the latter cage or annex, and said cage proper having upstanding Wire-rods engaging said keepers.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two WitDGSSCSl JOSEPH A. DIETZ.
