IIERVEY D. CLARK, OF ARCOLA, ILLINOIS.
SCOOP-HANDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 13. 1907. Serial No. 373,365.
Patented Dec. 31, 1907.
.T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERVEY D. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arcola, in the county of Douglas and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scoop-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in handles for scoops, spades, shovels and other tion is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a scoop provided with the improved supplemental handle. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the brace.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the blade and Z the handle of a scoop of ordinary construction, the handle being provided, as usual, at its rear end with a grip or hand. hold 3.
In carrying my invention into practice, I provide a supplemental handle 4, secured at its upper end or rear end to the handle 1 adj acent the hand hold 3, or directly to the latter, and having its forward end terminating at a point forward of the rear end. of the blade 1.
The forward end of the supplemental handle 4 is supported from the blade of the scoop by an inverted V-shaped brace 5, preferably consisting of a rod or single piece of stout wire. The lower free ends of the arms of the brace are bolted or otherwise fastened, as at 6, to the sides of the blade on opposite sides of the socketed portion thereof receiving the lower end of the handle 2, while the upper converging ends of said arms are connected by a bight portion which is folded with its bent portions in contact to provide a rearwardly extending tang 7 fitted in the socket in the forward end of the supplemental handle 4, which is provided with a strengthening ferrule S. It will be seen that the peculiar form of the brace is of advantage in reinforcing the supplemental handle against both vertical and lateral strain, thus rigidly connecting the free end. thereof to the blade of the scoop.
The invention may be applied to scoops, spades and shovels, and by the provision of the supplemental handle, which is engaged by the forward hand of the operator, the latter is greatly relieved of the weight thrown upon the forward hand by bearing down upon the upper end of the handle with the other hand to balance or raise the weight upon the scoop. The supplemental handle further relieves the person using the tool from the necessity of stooping so low to lift it as he must with the ordinary construction and avoids the twisting strain of the body caused by the lift of a heavy load when the forward hand is placed low down upon the usual handle 2. In addition, it will be understood that the forward hand of the operator may be placed upon the supplemental handle at any point between the rear end of the handle 2 and a point above the blade, and may he slid back and forth thereon in the various manipulations of the scoop, thus rendering the scoop more convenient and efficient in use and adapting it to be manipulated with decreased power and strain.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed. as new is 1. In combination with a blade and handle of a scoop, a supplemental handle secured at its rear end to the scoop handle and extending forwardly to a point forward of the rear end of the blade, and a brace connecting the said forward end of the supplemental handle to the sides of the blade.
In combination with a blade and handle of a scoop, a supplemental handle secured at its rear end to the rear end of the scoop handle and extending to a point above the blade, and a V-shaped. brace connecting the to a point above the scoop blade, and a brace forward end of the supplemental handle to therefrom to opposite sides of the blade and the rear end of the blade. secured to the rear portions of the latter. 10 3.
