JOHN MoRnrsoNfJn, AND MATTHEW P. BENSON, OF UPPER TROY, NEW YORK.
COMBINED WARDROBE APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Applicatioirfiled. February 11, 1907. Serial No. 356,772.
' To all whom it may concern."
Be it known 'thatwe, JOHN MORRISON, Jr.,
. and lVIATTHEW P. Benson, both citizens of the United, States, and residents of Upper Troy, in the countyof Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and Imfproved Combined Wardrobe Appliance, of
- which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
- ances, our more particular purpose being to Gur invention relates to wardrobe appliproduce a combinational. device capable of use'in several distinct relations.
Reference is to'be had to the accompanying' drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the v Figure 1 is a perspective showing oneof our combination wardrobe appliances com plete, and ready for use "more particularly as a garment hanger; Fig. 2 shows the same device when. folded and ready to be packed by a travelerjor carriedin the ocket, the device occupying a form in whic it may be used as a double brush; Fig. 3 is .a fragmentary elevation showing the device ready for use as a garment hanger and also showing the ivotally sup orted metallic member used or securing tie movable parts in predetermined relations and for other purposes; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation. showing the device .ready for use in-hanging a garment so as to space thelatter from a wall.
Two brush backs 5, 6 are connected together by a bin e 7 and are adapted to fold, as indicated in ig. 2. The brush back 5 is provided with a slot 8 and the brush back 5 with a slot 10, the latter being much longer than the slot 8. These two slots register with each other when the. brush backs ocv cupy the position indicated in Figs. 1 and 3.
iA slot '9 terminates in an obliquely disposed Wall 10 of the brush back. A metallic member 11, made preferably of spring wire, is
neatly fitted into the slot 9 and is mounted With a hole 17 disposed obliquely, as .indicated in Fig. 2, and adapted to receive the arcuate portion16 of the metallic member 11. The brush ba'cks are provided with bristles 18, 19 of different degrees of fineness, so'as to virtually constitute two brushes, one coarse and the other fine.
At 20 (Fig. 4) is shown a. Wall. The portion 15 of the metallic memberfis of such length that whenthe metallic member 11 is used in hanging a garment close to the wall 20, the garment is spaced from the wall, as indicated in Fig. 4. The curved portion 14 of the metallic member 11 is of suitable ishape to enable an article, such asa derby hat, to be rested thereupon.
Patented March 10, 1908.
Our invention is used as follows: The
operatordor instance, a traveler) carries the device normally folded, as indicated inFig.
2. In this condition it may be used as a clothes brush. By unfolding the device and swinging the metallic member v11 upward, as indicated in F igj 1, the angularportion 13 (Fig. 3) asses into the slot 8 and locks the two brush backs 5, 6 rigidlyin relation to each other. The traveler may now use either the bristles 18 or the bristles 19, accordingly as he may desire to employ a soft brush or a stiff brush. The curved part 14 may be brought into engagement with a nail for the purpose of hanging the device. In such case, the latter is employed as a garment hanger. With the parts closed, as in Fig. 2,
the arcuate portion 16 enters the hole 17 and I locksthe two brush backs together, so as to avoid their misplacement.
It will be noted that our device contains two complete brushes capable of being united into a single brush, and also capable of forming, when extended, a garment hanger having specified advantages.
Having thus described. our invention, We claim as new and. desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1, In a. garment hanger, the combination of apair of brushes connected together and each'provided with a slot, and a metallic member pivotally mounted within one of said slots and ada ted to enter the other for the urpose of ho ding said members rigidly in a 'nement with each other.
2. The combination ofa pair of matin brush members hinged together and adapte to be folded and. unfolded, and a metallic fastening member connected with one of said i brush members and provided with a port1on for engaging the other brush member, said 'of a plurality of separate brush members members together side by side.
metallic fastening member extending in a lateral direction from said brush members, for the purpose of spacing the brush members from a wall. i
3. Ina garment hanger, the combination hinged together endto end and adapted to fold side by side, and a fastening member pivotally mounted upon one of said brush members and provided with a portion for engaging the other brush member so as to lock said brush members together end to end, said fastening member being further provided With means for locking saidbrush 4. In a garment hanger, the combination of 'a pair of brush members connected together and movable in relation to each other,
each of said members being provided with a slot, said slots being so positioned as to reg- 1 ssrsle ister with each other when saidbrush memhere are disposed end to end, a fastening member mountedwithin the slot of one of said brush members and provided with a portion for projecting into the slot of. the
other brush member when said slots are in registry with each other, said fastening member being provided With a distinct portion adaptedfto reach from one of said slots to the other for the purpose of holding said brush members together \i hen folded side by side.
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN MORRYSON, J11. ii'iATTHEViF P. BENSON.
