STRIKING DEVICE FOR DOOR LOCKS AND LATCHES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 16, 1908.
Application filed October 2, 1907. Serial No. 395,499.
tain new and useful Improvements in Striking Devices forDoor Locks and Latches, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an improvement on that described in U. S. Letters Patent, #839,556, granted Dec. 25, 1906, and the object thereof is to provide a striker device which is secured to and in a door frame, and in connecthe latch-bolt, or latch. and lock bolts of the lock operate when the door In the patent referred to, the striker device or the art thereof in connection with which the atch-bolt or latch and lock-bolts operate was made adjustable toward and from the door, so as to accommodate the device to shrinkage of the door frame and permit of the proper o eration of the device after such shrinkage; ut in this invention that art of the striker device in connection witli which the latch-bolt or latch and lock-bolts o erate is made adjustable'both toward and from the door and vertically so as to secure a proper operation of the latch or look and accommodate the same to the door when the door shrinks or sags, or both shrinks and sa s.
The invention is ully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which igure 1 is a central vertical section of my improved striker device for doors. Fig. 2 a front or face view thereof. Fig. 3 a transverse section on the line 3, 3 of Fi s. 1 and 2, and :-Fig. 4 a perspective view 0 a detail of the construction.
y improved striker device is shown as a hole at a, and consists of three main parts I), c, and d and other details of construction as hereinafter described. The part 6 consists of a case composed of a back plate 6 having forwardly directed parallel end members 12 provided at their outer or front ends with inwardly directed ears I), said case being open at the sides and at the front.
The part 0 consists of a box-shaped case,
composed of a back 0 side members 0 and a front plate 0 which is secured thereto, said box-shaped case being open at the ends and front, and the front plate (2 being provided with a corresponding opening as shown at c. The back wall or late 0 of the case 0 is also provided with a ongitudinal slot 0 and the ends thereof with longitudinal recesses 0 The part (Z consists of a box-shaped case open at the back and front, and the ends of which are provided at the back with ears (Z and one side of said case at is provided at the front with a laterally directed striker tongue at, against which the latch-bolt or look bolt, or that part of the latch or look which is secured in the door operates.
It will be observed that the case b is longer than the cases 0 and d, the latter cases being substantially of the same length, and the opening 0 in the plate 0 which is secured to the case 0 is longer than the cases 0 and d and a little shorter than the case b and the ends of said opening are provided with recesses c".
In assembling the parts of this device, the case d is passed backwardly into the case 0 and screws 6 are passed through the ears I) of the case b and through the ears (Z of the case 65 and into the back of the case b, in which said screws are rotatable, and the end portions of said screws which pass back of the case b are reduced in riveted or rovided with heads 6 the front ends of said screws being provided with ordinary heads which are countersunk in the ears 5 A screw f is also passed backwardly through the slot 0 in the back of the case 0, and through the back 6 of the case b, and a washer g is placed between said cases through which the screw f also passes. The end portions of the front plate 0 which is secured to the case 0 are provided with screw holes 7L, and in ractice the body portion of the striker evice consisting of separate parts assembled as above described is countersunk in the door-frame in the usual manner. By means of the screws e, the case d with the striker ton ue (1 connected therewith may be adjusted inwardly and outwardly, or toward and from the door at all times. When these screws are turned in one direction, the case (1 with the striker tongue (1 is adjusted outwardly, and whensaid screws are-turned in the other direction the case d will be adjusted inwardly. In this operation the case size, and
vertically, the cases I) and (1 move together,
, said inthe case a, it being understood that the case 0 with the plate 0 are stationary at all times. Whenever. it is desired to adjust the cases 12 and d vertically, the screw f is loosened and the cases I) and (i may be adjusted vertically after which the screw f is tightened. The cases 6 and (1 may be adjusted by simply taking hold of the striker tongue (1 and moving saidparts vertically as will be readily understood.
I have not shown the door or that part of the lock connected therewith for the reason that they form no part of this invention and arts are clear y shown in the patent referre to, together with a part of the doorframe in which the striker device is secured.
The recesses c in the ends of' the back wall, of the case a are designed to receive the screw e in the vertical adjustment of the parts I) and d, as herein described and the object of the recesses c in the plate cwhich form an extension of the opening 0 in both directions is to provide means whereby the screws 6 may be manipulated in any position of the parts I) and d, it being understood that when said parts are in their highest or lowest osition the screws e must be manipu ated through said recesses by means of an ordinary screw-driver.
My invention is not limited to the exact details of construction herein shown and described, and although I have described the parts I), scribed, it will be apparent that other forms of construction may be employed, and various other changes in, and modifications of the construction herein shown and described forwardly and backwar c and d as cases, as shown and demay be made within the scope of the pended claims without departing from spirit of my invention or sacrificing its vantages.
' Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is "1. A striker device for door locks comprising a part provided with a face plate having a central longitudinal o ening, a second part adjustable longitudina y of the first part back of the face plate, a third piart mounted in the second part and adjusta le forwardly and backward y throu h the opening in the face plate, means for a 'usting the third part dly through the opening in the face plate, and devices for ad usting the second and third parts longitudinally of the first part.
2. A striker device for door locks comprising a part provided with'a face plate having a central longitudinal o ening, a second part adjustable longitudinally of .the first part back of the face plate, a third in the. second art and adjusta andbackward y throu h the opening in the face plate, means for ad p)art mounted justmg the third part forwardly and backwardly throughthe' opening in the face plate, and devices for ad usting the second and third parts longitudinally 70 of the-first part. c
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 30th day of September, 1907.
