This invention relates to attachments for Jrintingstamps, and is particularly useful in connection with stamps for printing upon blank checks and the like.

An object of the invention is to provide a simple, strong and eflicicnt attachment to be used in combination with a printing stamp, and serving for the support and adjustment of the document, check, or other object to be printed upon.

A furthe;- object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described, which serves for the positioning of the object to be printed upon and also for the determination of the position of the matter printed upon the object.

A still further object of the invention is to provide an attachment in combination with a printing stamp, and having adjustable means for positioning the object to be printed upon, so that the attachment is adapted for use in connection with objects of various sizes, and further, having means for indicating the oint of the application of the stamp to the 0 ject.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in thefclaims.

.Before proceeding to ,21-111018 detailed ex" planation. of my invei ition, it should be clearly understood that while the same is particularly useful in connection with printmg stamps used. for marking limiting or pro tective expressions upon bank checks, it'can also. be advantageously used with printing stamps or like devices for other purposes. As it is often possible to raise or increase the amount of a bank check, and thereby fraudulently cause "a loss to the bank,' or the drawer of the check, it has become customary to mark upon checks,expressions which limit the amounts of the same. For example, some expression, such as Not over 5,000, is printed upon the check, and the bankis thereby Warned not to pay out an amount greater than this, upon the check in question. To mark expressions of this kind upon checks and other papers or instruments, various forms of printing stamps are employed. In checks or instruments differing in size it is-often a matter of difl iculty tostamp the required expression neatly u )on the instrument and upon any part-icu ar, 7 predetermined part thereof. My invention, when attached to a printing stamp provides means for positioning an object to be stamped, so that, when the objects are all of one size, the expression is imprinted thereupon at the same part of each, and, further,

is adjustable, so that it is adapted for use with checks, documents or other instruments of various sizes. I also provide means for indicating the point of ap lication of the stamp so that the operator t iereof can at all times determine upon which part of the object the stamp is being applied.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 10 represents a printing stamp, which may be of any preferred or common form. The type of stamp shown, for example, in the accompanying drawings, comprisesa base or support 11 upon which is carried a rotatable barrel 12 having at one end a head 13, by means of which it can be manually operated, and having indicated thereon, various amounts. Within the base 11. and adapted to co-act with the barrel, is the printing mechanism (not shown). The barrel carries the printing type or faces. By suitably adjusting the barrel, the amounts included in the protective or limiting expression to be imprinted upon the stamp, canbe altered. Nearthe base, the barrel at one side has a slot 14 into which the check 15 or other object is-inserted. A handle 16 above the barrel, serves for the operation of the stamp.

I'providea shelf 17 fashioned from sheet metal'or any other suitable material and low the slot 14 and'has the sides 18 located at the sides of the barrel. The position of the shelf is such that when the object is placed thereupon-it can easily be inserted into the slot 14 to permit' the application of the stamp. The shelf is screwed or otherwise firmly mounted in posit-i011 upon the stamp. At the under side, the shelf, which is provided at the outer edges with downwardly disposed flanges 19, has brackets 20 held in position by means of screws or rivets 21. At the opposite ends, each of the brackets 20 has laterally disposed flanges 22-provided with registering openings. A U-shaped rod or bar 23 is mounted at the under side of the shelf and has the arms 24 slidably arranged in the registering openings of the bracket flanges 22. The sides of the shelf'near the ends,'have slots 25 in one of which is located an upwardlydisposed end or toe 26 of an arm 24 of the rod 3. The toe 26 projects throughthe slot 25 to the upper side of the shelf and constitutes a stop to limit the insertion of the object 15 into the slot 14. The shelf, above the slot 25 through which the toe 26 projects, has an oflset membe1fl27 held in position by screws or rivets 28 and extending above the object when the latter is in position and thus serving to hold it in position. The member 27 has a slot 29 through which the toe 26 appears. The arrangement is such that the end edge 30- of the, member 27 is in a line with the line of application of the printed expression formed by the stamp. That is, the edge 30 of the member 27 indicates the position of the expression to be printed, with respect to the shelf, and thereby provides means for determining the part of the object 15 upon which 2;; the expression will appear.

The slot 25 of the side 18 remote from the member 27 has slidably arranged therein a block 31 which is rigidly secured at the end of the adjacent arm 24. The block 31 carries a plate 32 having a further block 33 slidably arranged in another slot 34 of the side 18. The plate has a stop 35 alined with the toe 26 and serving to limit the insertion of the object into the slot- 14. The plate has an openlng which receives a thumb -nut 36. The thumb; nut 36 is arranged in a suitably threaded recess of the block 31 and can be jammed against'the shelf to lock the plate and the'member 23in a plurality of positions. It will be understood that by means of the thumb-nut, the movable parts, including the stops which limit the position of the object to be stamped, can be adjusted and can be locked in a plurality of positions. By means of this ustment the attachment is adapted for use in connection with checks, documents, or other objects of various sizes.

The slot 34 has an extended portion 37 to permit the operator to view an :uljusting cad 38 of the stamp, located below the shelf.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. The combination, with a printing stamp, of a support for an object to be stamped, means for limiting the insertion of the object into saidstainp, and an; offset plate carried by said support and arranged substantially parallel to said support to extend over the object when the same is in position to be stamped, said plate serving to indicate the point of application of the stamp.

2. The combination, with a printing stamp, of a shelf adapted to carry an object to be stamped, a plurality of stops adapted to cooperate to limit the positioning of the object, means for locking said stops'in a lurality of posit-ions, and means upon said s ielf for indicatin thepoint of application of the stam ,said last means consisting of an olfset p ate arranged at one side of said printing means and extending over said shelf whereby it serves to hold the object in position upon said shelf.

3. The combination, with a'sta'mp, of a shelf, stops movably arranged at the sides of said shelf and extending thereabove, means for operatively connecting said stops at the under side of said' shelf, and clamping means carried by one of said stops for holding said stops in a lurality of positions, said stops serving to limit the positioning of an object to be stamped.

4. The combination, with a stamp, of a shelf having slots, stops movably' arranged at the under side of said shelf and extending thereabove through said slots, means for operatively connecting said stops at the under side of said shelf, clamping means on one of said stops and serving to engage said shelf for holding said stops in a plurality of positions with respect to said shelf, said stops serving to limit the ositioning of an object to be stamped, and means carried by said shelf and serving to indicate the paint of application of the stamp.

5. The combination, with a'sta'mp, of a shelf having sides provided with slots, a movable member at the under side of said shelf and having arms, one of said arms having a toe extending through one of said slots and constituting a stop tolimit the posi tioning of the object to be stamped, a block slidabl y arranged in another of said's'lots and rigid with the other of said arms, a plate carried by said block and having a stop to cooperate with said first stop tolimit the positioning of the object, a thumb-nut carried by said plate and adapted to l)6jt1-I11111(l against said shelf and serving to. indicate the point of application of the stamp, said member being offset to extend above said shelf.
