Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 15, 1909.
Application flied July 8, 1908. Serial No. 442,466.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, lll-2NJ.\.\II.\' 'num' and Tnou-is 'A'rmxs linwunm, hoih cilizcns of the United States, and residents of 5 the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the count) of Kings and State of ;\ew .York, have invented a new and improved Mouth iind Nose Protector. of which lhc l'ollowing is a full, clennnnd exact description.
10 This invention relates to certain improve.-
nienls in devices adapted for use in covering the mouth and nose, to preventthe admission of dust orother living particles or germs.
The object of the invention is to so con-' inouth may be uncovered, ,u'ithout uncovermg me other and without removing the guard or protector.
Our invention consists m the forming of connected together, one adapted to cover the mouth and the other adapted to cover the nose, and used in connection with u support which serves to hold both sections in their 25 pro ier position.
. llelerenee is in be had lo the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specificalion, in which similar characters of'rol'ercme indicate eorres mmling parts in both the fig- Figure 1 is aside elevation showing our improved guard at it appears when in use, and showing indotted lines, the mouth protector in its raised position; and Fig. 2 is a central nose protector in its loweredposition.
In the specific form of guard or rotector illustrated in the sccompanying (ran-lugs, we provide two main sections 10 and 11, so
40 connected together as. to permit relative movement. Each sectiolrisprovided withan outer marginal or pcri :hernl frame 12, ireferahly formed of 1netnl, und within the arm: is an outer layer or sheet of wire net-' tin 13, and within the wire netting is a layer or s met 14 of medicated cotton or other simi'-- lar fabric or material ado tell toprevent the passage ofyfne dust an germs. The wire netting is preferably permanently secured to the frame, ut the inner layer of cotton or the iil c,is readily rmnm'ahle to permit of its redac-ement when soiled or no longer oliicient. ihe inner layer may he held in place in any suitable manner. but there are lrefcrably employed clips In. which incloso t no edge of 55 ihe frame nnd have 'inwnrdly-cxtemling prongs-f or resiliently holding the edges of the cotton In the wire netting.
The lower section 11 is substantially elli tical in shape and is adapted to fit over t 16 to mouth and a small portion of the lips and checks. The upper section 10 is secured at its lower edge by a hinge 15 to the upper edge of the lower section, and said upper section is so formed as to lit about the nostrils and provent the admission of any air save that passing through the wircnetling and medicated cotton. The pivot pin of the hinge extends transvelsel and is dis osed int ennediate the mouth am nose, so that the up or section may he turned down to uncover tiio nostrils, or the lower section may he raised to uncover the mouth, indepcndcntl of the other section. In connection with the hinge I may em day it spring.
For securing our improved guard or proteeter in position, we employ at bond 16, adapted to partially encircle the head of the wearer, and having at each end thereof two cords or otheraueinhers 1" terminating in hooks 18 engaging with thei mine of the sections adjacent their ends. The cords are so disposed that the hooks at the end of either one of them, may be disconnected from the corresponding section of the guard, and the 86 lower scct'ion'lolded upwardly, as indicated in 1 iF.-,1,'or the upper section folded downward y, as indicator in Fig. 2. Our nn proved device is especially 'ndaptod i'ornurses and physicians in the treatment of 90 contagious diseases, as the medicated lining serves to rovent the admission of germs but it is equa l udu ted for use by street eanms, or otheis w no work in a dust-laden utmoslphere, whether germs are present or not. I living thus described our mvent1on, we chum as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A month and nose rotector, includin two sections, ono udapte to cover the moat and 3 the other adapted to cover the nostrils, each In testimony whereof we have signed our of said sections, having a metal frame, an names. to this specification in the presence of outer layer of wire netting and an inner layer two subscribing witnesses.
of medicated cotton, a hinge connecting said BENJAMIN WOOLF.
sections, and a band adapted to extend THOMAS WATKINS RICHARDS. around the head of the wearer and. having separate cords at the ends thereof for supporting said sections independently.
