Ardtrea, in the county of Sim cos, lh-ovince of Untario, Canada, have lnvented certain new and useful improvements in Metallic Conveycr-fihains for Harvesters and Binders; and i do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of. reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention. relates to new and useful improvements in endless metallic link carriers for use upon harvesters, reapers, etc, and the object in view is to produce a simple, efficient and durable metallic carrier to dispense with the usual canvas conveyer utilized in carrying grain to the knotter upon harvesting machines.
The invention comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrange ments of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a conveyer made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. llig. 3 is a sectional view transversely through the carrier, taken on line 3--3 of liig. Fig. i is an enlarged detail perspective view of one of the links of the carrier, and liig. 5 is a diagrammatic view showing the arrangement of the carrier.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A. designates a por tion of one of the wheels adapted to drive the conveyor, said wheel being provided with a series of angled outlined notches B at equal distances apart about its circumference.
CC designate links which are connected together by means of the hinged rods D and said links may be of any convenient length in order to allow the carrier to turn freely about wheels of different diameters. Fixed to each link is an angled tooth E, and i designates spacing members which are preferably cylindrical in outline, as shown by dotted outlines in :ifig. 2 of the drawings, and the outer end of each of said members has oppositely disposed beveled surfaces G.
Each member i is mid to the link by means of a screw or pin ii passing centrally through tne member and also centrally through a v l the drawing.
A series of plates, designated by letter N, provided, a detail view of one of which is shown in 4 of the drawings, each of said plates being fastened to a pin H. One edge of each plate N is provided with a series of teeth G which are at right angles to the face of the plate and at each end of the series of teeth is a lug G which projects beyond the upturned teeth. The opposite longitudinal edge of each plate is provided with the projections it near the ends thereof and an intermediate projection S which are adapted to contact with the under surface of an adjacent plate when the plates turn with the endless link carrier about the wheels A. The beveling of the spacing members F, as shown at letter G, is for the purpose of allowing the plates to turn as the carrier moves about the wheel A.
in 5 of the drawings, I have shown a diagrammatic view in which the endless carrier passes about the pulleys 'l forming an angled course for the conveyer, and L designates a second conveyer positioned a slight distance from the inclined portion of the conveyer beneath and between which straw or other material is adapted to be elevated from one portion of the harvester apparatus to another.
By the provision of a metallic grain carrier as shown and described, it will be readily seen that a simple and efficient substitute for the usual canvas is afforded and one which will obviate the many objections met with in the use of canvas which is perishable and varies under different conditions and oftentimes affording delays in the operation of the machine besides the expense lncident to the frequent renewing of the carriers.
What I claim to be new is 2-- 1. A metallic straw carrying conveyer comprising an endless chain, a tooth projccting from each link of the chain, a wheel having notches engaged by said teeth, a series of plates each having a row of teeth projecting at right angles therefrom, spacing members interposed between said plates and the carrier chain, and means for fastening the plates to the chain, as set forth.
2. A metallic straw carrying conveyor comprising an endless chain, atooth projecting from each link of the chain, a wheel hav his ing notches engaged by said teeth, a series of plates each having a row of teeth projecting at right angles therefrom, a series of spacing members interposed between the links of the carrier and said plates, each member having beveled faces, and fastening means securing each plate and member to one of the links of the carrier, as set forth.
3. A metallic straw carrying conveyer comprising an endless chain, means for driv ing the carrier, plates secured to the links of the carrier and spaced apart therefrom, each plate having a series of teeth along-its longitudinal edges, and lugs projecting one from each end of the series of teeth and adapted to overlap the adjacent plate, as set forth.
4. A metallic straw carrying conveyer comprising an endless chain, means for driving the carrier, plates secured to the links of the carrier and spaced apart therefrom, each plate having a series of teeth along its longitudinal edges, lugs projecting one from each end of the series of teeth and adapted to overlap the adjacent plate, and projections upon the opposite longitudinal edge of the plate, as set forth.
