EDWIN HALL HUMPHREY, OF NORTH CLYMER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF IO N. S. COVEY, OF COREY, PENNSYLVANIA.
PENCIL-SHARPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Eowin HALL HU M- rnnnv, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Clymer, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have "invented a new and useful Pencil-Sharpener. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pencil sharpeners and its object is to provide a device of this character having two varieties of rubber erasers combined therewith one for use in removing ink marks and the other for 'use in removing pencil marks, said device also including a steel eraser for-scratching inkmarks and the like from sheets of paper.
Another object is to provide a device of this character the working parts of which can be readily removed and new ones substituted therefor in the event of wear or break- Another object is to provide a pencilsharpener and, steel eraser formed in one piece and which can be readily stamped or otherwise formed from-a strip ofstee With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the head of the tool. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the combined pencil-sharpener and scratcher.
Referring to the figures b characters of reference 1 designates a han le which if desired can be formed of material suitable for burnishing and this handle has a head 2 at one end slotted transversely in the direction of its length as indicated at 3 so as to receive a metal strip 4. one end of which is rounded as shown at 5 to constitute an ink scratcher, said rounded portion being sharpened and preferably coming to a point 6 at the front end thereof. The other end of the strip 4 is folded back on itself so as to lap a portion of one edge of the head 2 and the terminal portion of said strip 4 extends beyond this folded end 7 of the strip as indicated at 8, the end edge of this terminal portion being sliar ened so as to constitute an efficient encil-s arpener.
The s 0t 3 is enlarged transversely at its registers with an opening 14 formed in the head 2. These openmgs are designed to receive a screw 15 which is threaded thereinto and which, when tightened, serves to clamp the walls of the slot 3 upon opposite faces of the strip or blade 4 and the walls of the enlarged portion 9 of the slot a ainst opposite faces of the eraser 10. It wilfbe seen therefore that when the parts have thus been tightened it becomes impossible for the stri 4; and the eraser 10 to become displaced an the various parts of the device can therefore readily be used for the purposes for which they are intended.
When it is desired to sharpen a lead-pencil it is merely necessary to grasp the handle 1 and the projecting terminal portion 8 which is provided with a sharpened ed e can be used after the manner of a kni eblade for this purpose. To scratch an ink or other mark from a sheet of paper the head 2 is reversed so as to bring the scratching-blade 5 in position where it can be used upon the paper. By holding the handle 1 in a substantially upright position either of the arms 11 and 12 of the eraser can be used for rubbing out marks on paper. Should the scratcher 5 or the blade 8 become broken or worn and it should be deemed desirable to remove them from the head, it becomes merely necessary to loosen the screw 15, whereupon the strip 1 can be withdrawn longitudinally from the slot 3 and a. new
one inserted. To remove the eraser 10 it is sacrificing the advanta es of the invention, such chan es being 0 course within the limits of t e claims.
Importance is attached to the fact that the strip 4 is folded back on to the head as indicated at 7. This folded portion thus bears against the head and is positively held against movement relative to the head while a encil is being sharpened.
at is claimed is 1. A pencil sharpener comprising a head having a slot therein, a blade extending through the slot and having its endportions projecting beyond 0 posite portions of the head, one of said en portions being folded on to the head and constitutin a sharpener, and means for bindin the wa is of the slot upon the blade to ho d said blade against dlsplacement.
2. A pencil sharpener comprising a handle, ahead thereon havin aslot extending transversely therein, a bla e arranged within the slot and having its ends projecting beyond opposite portions of the head, one end of said blade being folded on to the head and extending laterally therebeyond to constitute a pencil-sharpener, and means extending through the head for binding the walls of the slot upon the blade to hold the blade against movement relative to the head.
3. A pencil sharpener comprising a han-.
dle, a head thereon having a slot extending transversely therein, a strip extending with-.
in and be ond the slot, one rojecting end portion 0 the strip being fol ed back on to the head so as to fit snugly thereon and thence folded upon itself and extended be my own, I have hereto afiixed my slgnature in the presence of two witnesses.
