G. SLOCUM AND` M. T. SAYLES, OF LANSINGBURG, NEV YORK.
MACHINERY FOR CRIMPING METAL BARS. l
Specification of Letters Patent No. 9,392, dated November 9, 1852.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Gines SLooUM and M. T. SAYLES, of Lansingburg, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Crimping Bars of Iron for Grnamental Fences, Sac.; andwe do hereby declare that the followng is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which* Figure 1, is a longitudinal vertical section of the machine taken at the line X, X, Fig. 3. F ig. 2, is a plan or top View of ditto. Fig. 3, is an end view of ditto in elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures.
This invention relates to an improved machine for crimping or bending bars of iron for ornamental fencing, stair stringers, and other purposes where bars thus bent or crimped may be applied.
The invention consists in a peculiar manner of operating a pair of` dies, one or both of which may be flexible, said dies passing between pressure rollers which force the dies together and crimp or bend the iron as will be fully described hereafter.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A, represents a frame constructed in any suitable manner.
B, B, are stationary rollers placed transversely in the frame A, as seen in Fig. 1.
C, is a movable bed on the upper part of which is secured the female die D. The male die E, is secured by a pivot (a) to one end of the female die as seen in Fig. 1. The female die D, is solid, or is not flexible, while the male die E, is flexible, it having a series of joints The female die is formed of a series of triangular shaped recesses, and the male die is formed of a series of triangular shaped projections connected by the pivots (b) which projections fit into the recesses when the dies are pressed together.
The movable bed C, to which the dies are attached works or moves on the stationary vers having arms (c) which rest over the upper, ends of the slide rods, see Fig. 2. At the end of each lever J, there is attached a weight K, see Fig. 1, and dotted lines in Fig. 2, these weights cause the arms (c) of the levers J, J, to bear upon the upper ends of the slide rods H, and consequently keep the rollers G, G, depressed and cause them to bear or press upon the male die E, as will be presently shown.
L, Fig. 1 is a bar of iron placed over the female die D, the bar L, is placed in this position when it is to be crimpled or bent.
The operation of the machine will be readily seen. The bar L is placed over the female die D, as just shown and power is applied to the roller B', by the turning of a crank or pulley, the roller B, as it revolves winds upon it the cord F, and the movable bed C, with the male and female dies E, D, is forced between the rollers yB, B, and G, G, the rollers Gr, G, in consequence of the weights K, K, acting upon the slide rods H, bearing or pressing the male die upon the bar L, and forcing said bar into the triangular recesses of the female die D. The front roller acts of course upon the first projection of the male die and after that is forced into the first recess of the female die the second roller retains the bar L, and prevents it from being withdrawn as the first roller acts upon the succeeding projection of the male die E. Thus the movable bed C, is moved along until the whole length of the dies have passed between the rollers, and the bar bent or crimpled.
W'e do not claim the flexible die E, nor the combination of the permanent die D, and flexible die E, as they have been previously used, but* Ihat we do claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
