Description

'WELLIAM H. CROSS, QF DAYTON, OHIO.
, I rm eous'rnocrron.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Caoss, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and. State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Pump Constructions and'I o declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompany ing drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. v
This invention relates to certain improvements in pump construction. a
The ob ect of the invention is to rovide a pump which is devoid of the usua packing. To this end the pump is provided with an inner removable cylinder in which the piston moves. ThlS inner cylinder cooperates with other arts of the ump, at both ends,
to form tig t joints wit out the use of any of the well known forms of packing usually found necessary to employ in a variety of pumps. I
, In the accompanyin pum the invention is clearl illustrated and in connection with a description of the pum various well known features willlbe moi entally referred to. I v The outer cylinder 1 or pump casing, comprises a casting which may be made of any suitable metal to meet the requirements. One end of said pumcasing is provided with a screw threade aperture of reduced diameter as compared with the diameter of the pump casing, and the other end of the iocasing terminates in the same diameter as the body portion of said casing and is provided with screw threads for the attachment of an apertured member 3 which is also screw threaded to connect with the inlet pipe 4, the outlet pipe 5 connecting with the other end of the pumeasing just described. The up r end of 0 pump terror thereof, is provided with an annular shoulder 2' b machining the same, and in the lower en of said pump casing resting upon the member 3 is a. disk 8. 2 designates an interior cylinder or removable lining one end of which engages the shoulder 2* inthe up er end of the pump casing and the lower em of which engages the upper side of the disk 8 at the point 2. By screwing the Specification of Letters Patent.

member 3 into the lower end of the pump casing, the ends of the cylinder2 are brought in rigid contact with the shoulder 2 and the disk is and the effect of a tight joint is thus secured at each end of the inner cylinder and between said inner cylinder and. the
pump casing which dispenses with the necessity of employing any other packing.
It will be understood that the shoulder 2, disk 8 and the ends of the cylinder 2 are suitably faced to provide for a close even contact between the several parts. The upper end of the cylinder is held in position by the surrounding surface 1 of the ump casing, and the lower end of said cylinder is similarly held in position by a surrounding. portion 1 which is in alinement at all p points with the upper surface 1". The lower inlet valve 6 seats upon the surround ing portion' of the member 3, which ortion is suitably faced to provide a seat or said The said valve t3 has as integral parts thereof the usual wings 6 which form guides for the movement of the valve, and
the disk 8 is provided with a suitable numher of guides 7 projecting from its lower face within which said valve 6 moves when drawn from its seat by the upward movement of the piston. The piston consists of a spider 13 which terminates in an annulus 11, and a ring 10 which has a screw threaded engagement with said annulus, and between these parts suitable packing 12 is secured to effect a proper joint between the piston and the cylinder 2. The outlet valve 9 is inclosed within the arms of the piston and seats upon the portion 100i said piston, said valve having the usual form of wing guides which project through an axial opening in the lower part of the piston and into an axial opening in the disk 8 before referred to. The usual piston rod 14 extends from the piston to the exterior of the pump where it is, provided with any suitable power connection (not'shown). 7
Having described my invention, I claim: In a pump, in combination, a casing proa faced shoulder and an annu ar surface below said shoulder lying inwardly from the interior surface of said casing, the lower end of said casing being provided with a similar annular surface in alinement with the upper annular surface, a member united to the ower end of said pump casing, a disk supported upon said member, and an inner interior of the pump casing; the ends of said cylinder or linin' so engaging the shoulder on the upper e of the pump casing and the said'disk, efiecting a tight joint at both ends of the-cylinder,and a piston and valves operating substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I afhx my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
