Description

M. B. & J. K. HELLER ANDIBONS AND FENDER.
APPLIOATION FILED NOV. 1a. 1909.
Patented Sept. 13, 1910.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICAJ'AH B. HELLER AND JACOB K. HELLER, 0F TOWNVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA.
ANDIRONS AND FENDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 16, 1909.
Patented Sept. 13, 1910.
Serial No. 528,355.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HICAJAH B. HELLER and JACOB K. HELLER, citizens of the United States, residing at Townville, in the county of Anderson and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Andirons and Fenders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in andirons and fenders and the main object of our invention is to produce such a device that will be durable, efficient and ornamental.
The fender is so secured to the andirons that it prevents the fire from falling out of the fireplace upon the floor, obviating to a great extent the chance of damage being done thereby.
Another feature of our invention is that it may be made at a small cost without detracting from its efliciency.
WVith these and other objects in view our invention consists in the novel construction and arrangements of parts as are described in this specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Reference being had to the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a fireplace wherein our improved andirons and fender are embodied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail of one of the andirons. Fig. 3 is a partial top plan view of our device. Fig. 4; is a partial, enlarged, perspective View showing the fender in operative relation on the andirons.
our invention is described as follows:
Each andiron 1, is composed of a U- shaped portion 2, and a vertical member 3, which member is provided with an upturned hook 4. Extending rearwardly and turned downward at the rear end thereof is a brace 5, whose function is obvious.
A fender 6, is composed of a plurality of cross pieces 7, and a plurality of vertical uprights 8, said vertical uprights being secured to the cross pieces in any substantial manner. The uppermost cross piece is held against downward movement by means of said upturned hooks 4 and is held against sidewise movement by its own weight.
Partially encircling each vertical member 3 of the andirons 1, is a loop 9, the ends of which are secured to adjacent uprights 8. These loops positively secure the fender 6 from forward movement.
Although we have specifically described our invention yet we may claim the right to makesuch changes in the form and construction thereof as do not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claim appended.
What we claim as new, is:
In an andiron and fender of the class described, a plurality of andirons each of which is adapted to stand alone and each of which is provided with a vertical member, an upturned hook formed integral with each member, a fender composed of a plurality of crosspieces and vertical uprights, the upper of the crosspieces engaged by the hooks, which hooks secure the fender against downward or sidewise movement, a loop partially encircling each vertical member of the andirons, each loop having its ends secured to adjacent vertical uprights of the fender.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures, in presence of two witnesses.
