Description

L. A.-LE ROY. WASHBOILEB. APPLIOATIOH-IILED PEB.19, 1910.
Patented Dec. 6; 1910.
THE NORRIS PETERS 5a.. WASHINGTON. n. c.
r t me.
LUCY A. LE ROY, OF OKLAHOMA, OKLAHOMA.
WASHBOILER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUCY A. LE ROY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oklahoma city, in the county and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washboilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to vessels used for boiling clothes and has for its object the improvement of the construction of the vessel so as to insure a uniform circulation of the heated water while the clothes are being boiled.
To this end my invention consists in constructing the boiler with a curved or semicylindrical bottom supported by a casing having vertical end and side walls that are adapted to seat around the opening in the top of the stove or range, while the upper portion of the boiler has the usual vertical end and side walls except that the side wall that sets over the stove opening toward the rear of the stove has its upper portion curved inwardly, this construction insuring the circulation desired by reason of the greater heat on the side of the boiler toward the rear of the stove and the curved upper portion or" the corresponding side wall directing the water over and downwardly.
My invention will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1, is a side view of my improved wash boiler partly broken away, Fig. 2, a cross section on the line X-X of Fig. 1 showing the boiler in position on a fragment of a kitchen stove or range, and Fig. 3, a
fragmental longitudinal sectional view.
In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all of the views.
In Fig. 2 is shown a fragment of a conventional kitchen range or stove A having the opening a over the fire pot and B indicating the front of the stove or range.
My improved wash boiler has its two side walls 1 and 2 and the bottom 3 formed of a continuous piece of sheet metal, the end walls 4: being secured to the edges of the sheet forming said side walls and bottom. The side and end walls are formed Vertical except that the wall 2 is curved inwardly at its top as shown at 2 While the bottom 3 is Specification of Letters Patent.

formed curved or semi-cylindrical as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
5 indicates a casing secured to the side and end walls and extending below the plane of the curved bottom 3 to support the vessel in position on the stove A the lower edge of the casing being formed with a rolled edge 6 to give the casing the required rigidity. The upper edges of the side and end walls 1, 2 and 4 are also formed with rolled edges 7, and 8 indicates the lid or cover.
In use the boiler is set on the stove with the wall 1 toward the front of the stove while the rear wall 2 is toward the back of the stove. As the draft in kitchen stoves or ranges is away from the front of the stove it will be understood that the side 2 and the part of the bottom 3 adjacent to side 2 will receive the mostheat, so that there will be a current of water set up in the boiler substantially in the direction indicated by the arrows in Fig. 2, 2'. 6., upwardly in the part adjacent to the side 2, then thrown across toward the side 1 by the curved upper portion 2 downwardly along the side 1 and back along the bottom 3 to the place of beginning. This movement of the water causes a more thorough cleansing of the clothes because of the even distribution of the effects of boiling the water.
The construction of the bottom being, as shown semi-cylindrical and setting in a support-ing casing that engages the stove top adds to the efiiciency of the vessel by increasing the area of the surface exposed to the fire and the pockets formed between the curved surface of the bottom and the easing catches and retains the heated air.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is In a wash boiler having vertical sides and ends, and a bottom formed semi-cylindrical longitudinally of the vessels, one of the sides having its upper portion curved inwardly, and a supporting casing secured to the sides and ends, the supporting casing being adapted to seat over the opening in 'a kitchen stove or range and forming pockets or chambers to receive and hold heated air, the side having the curved portion being toward the rear of the stove or range and being heated by radiation from the rear of the stove while the other side, being over the cooler front portion of the stove causes a circulation of water to be set up in the boiler when in use, said circulation consisting of an upward movement of the water along the hotter side having the curved portion, across the boiler caused by the curved portion, downwardly along the cooler front side of the boiler, and then across and along the curved bottom to the place of beginning 10 In testimony whereof I hereto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
