Specification of Letters latent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES H. Roenes and SAMUEL E. Cannon, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Gib son City, in the county of Ford and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements' in Calipers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to calipers for testing and truing the balance wheels of watches, and it has for its object to produce a tool or implement of this character which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, ease and certainty of operation and general efhciency.
Vith these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is betterl understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being', however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modilications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing,-Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of a device constructed in accordance with the invention and showing a balance wheel in position for the test. Flg. 2 is asimilar view showing a balance wheel in position for truing. Fig.
3 is asectional detail view of a portion of f one of the adjustable sleeve members.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by lik-e characters of reference.
A handle 1 of suitable shape and dimensions is bifurcated at one end to form arms 2 and 3 lying in approximately parallel relation. The arm 2 has a vertical aperture 4l lying in axial alinement with an internally threaded aperture 5 extending through the arm 3.
A tubular sleeve member G is vertically movable in the aperture l1-, one side wall of said sleeve being provided with a notch 7 engaged by apin 8 which extends transversely through the arm 2 or through the flange or collar 9 upon said arm. The tubular sleeve 6 is provided adjacent its inner end with an internal flange 10 that is preferably beveled, as shown. At its outer end the sleeve G has a threaded plug or closure 11 formed with a head 12 having a slot 13 to receive one end of a lever lll which is fulcrumed upon the handle 1, said lever being forced in an outward direction by a suitable spring 15, whereby the sleeve (S is moved outward to an extent limited by the pin 8 and the length of the notch 7. Threaded into the outer end of the arm 2 is a set screw 1G which may be turned to frictionally engage the sleeve 6 for the purpose of retaining the latter at any desired adjustment, irrespective of the tension of the spring 15 actuating the lever 111. rPhe threaded aperture 5 in the arm 3 accommodates an adjustable externally threaded sleeve 17 provided at its inner end with an internal flange 1S which corresponds with the flange 1() in the sleeve 6. The outer end of the sleeve 17 has a screw plug 19 provided with a knob or handle 20, whereby the sleeve may be conveniently turned to effect adjustment thereof.
The sleeves and 17 each contain a slide or follower 21 which is forced in an inward direction by the action of a spring 22, said slides or followers being normally seated upon the flanges 10 and 1S, respectively. Each of these slides or followers has a terminal nipple 23 adapted to be projected slightly beyond the end of the sleeve and provided with a recess or socket 24 for the reception of one end of the balance statt', which latter' is shown at 25. A gage 2G is adjustably mounted upon the handle member 1 by means of a fastening member 27, said gage having a terminal linger.
In the operation of this device, the sleeve (3 is normally free to slide in the aperture prepared for its reception, the set screw 1G being withdrawn suiliciently to admit of such sliding movement, as will be seen in Fig. 1. The sleeve member 17 may be readily adjusted to accommodate balance Wheels of various dimensions. To place a balance wheel in position for testing the ends of the staff are engaged in the recesses or sockets 211, either of the slides or followers 21 being capable of being displaced against the tension of the spring 22 to permit the balance wheel to be readily adjusted. The finger 28 of the gage 27 is now directed toward the edge of the rim of the balance wheel, and by turning the latter any irregularity may be quickly detected visually. Should the need exist for truing the balance wheel, pressure exerted upon the lever 14 will force the sleeve member 6 in the direction of the sleeve member 17, and the slides or followers 21 will be displaced against the tension of the respective springs 22, the ends of the staff entering within the sleeves, 4the inner end of which latter will now abut upon and hold the balance wheel securely while it is being bent into proper shape. Vhile the operation of truing the wheel is taking place, the sleeve member G may be retained in position, as shown in Fig. 2, by means of the set screw 16.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a device of the character described, a handle member bifurcated at one end to form approximately parallel arms having apertures disposed in axial alinement, one of said apertures being internally threaded, a sleeve member slidably engaging the nonthreaded aperture, a spring actuated lever ulcrumed upon the handle member and engaging the sleeve member to force it in an outward direction, a set screw threaded into the end of the arm and adapted to engage the sleeve member, means for limiting the longitudinal movement of the latter, a second sleeve member slidably engaging the threaded aperture in the second arm, said sleeve members being provided with internal flanges adjacent to their inner ends, springactuated slides movable within the sleeve members and having socleted nipples adapted to be projected beyond the inner ends of the sleeve members, and a gage movably supported upon the handle member and having a terminal linger. j j
2. In a device of the character described, a handle member bifurcated at one end to form approximately parallel arms, sleeves adjustable in apertures in said arms, one of said sleeves being longitudinally slidablein the direction of thevother sleeve and the latter being externally threaded and thereby adjustable, closures at the outer ends of the sleeves, the closure of the slidable sleeve being provided with a slot, a spring actuated lever fulcrumed upon the main handle mem-r ber and engaging the slot, spring ,actuated slides within the sleeves adapted tol be partially projected toward each other and having recessed nipples, means for retaining the slidable sleeve in adjusted position, means 'for limiting the movement of said slidable sleeve, and an adjustably supported gage having a terminal finger.
