Specification of Letters Patent.

.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, BERTREL A. RAYMER and AUGUST Hnvnxnn, Jr., citizens of the United States of America, residing at Mc- Keesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to envelops, and the objects of our invention are to furnish an envelop with simple and effective means, as will be hereinafter set forth for preventing the envelop from being riiied, tampered with, or surreptitiously opened, and to provide such means that can be used in connection with the ordinary type of envelop.

Other objects of our invention are to provide an envelop that can be advantageously used in the transmission of valuable matter in the mails or by express, and to provide an envelop of the above type that is durable and capable of withstanding rough usage.

Further objects of the invention are to provide an envelop attachment that can be made of a single piece of material, cut and folded to lit in an ordinary envelop, and to obviate the necessity of using sealing wax and other devices for securing valuable matter in an envelop.

These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by the novel construction to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.

Reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein:

Figure 1 is a front elevation of the envelop in an open position. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the envelop part-ly closed. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the envelop completely closed. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the envelop taken on the line -az of Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on the line /w-fw of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view taken on the line a-a of Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is a front elevation of the attachment removed from the envelop, and Fig. 8 is a rear elevation of the same.

In the drawing the reference numeral 1 denotes the rectangular body of an ordinary envelop, having end flaps 2, a bottom flap 3, and a sealing flap 4, the aps 2 and 3 being adhesively secured together, and the flap 4 gummed or provided with adhesive material whereby it can be secured to the flaps 2 and 3 after a letter or other matter has been placed in the envelop.

The attachment for the envelop is adapted to be placed therein, and comprises a rectangular body 5 corresponding in shape to the body l of the envelop, the body 5 being of such a size that it can be easily placed within the envelop. The ends of the body are provided with side extensions 6 adapted to be folded thereon, said extensions extending from the lower edge of the body to the upper edge thereof. The lower edge of the body has a bottom extension 7 adapted to fold upon said body and the lower ends of the side extensions 6. The Lipper edge ofthe body 5 has a sealing extension 8, shaped similarly to the sealing flap 4 of the main envelop.

The front side of the body 5 is gummed as at 9 so that it can be secured to the inner sides of the flaps 2 and 3 of the main envelop, the body 5 being moistened and inserted in the main envelop, whereby it will be positively held within said envelop.

The extensions 6 and 7 are also provided with adhesive material 10, whereby the ends of the extensions 7 will be secured to the lower ends of the extensions 6, and all of said extensions adhesively secured to the inner side of the body 1, thus forming a pocket within the attachment, which is adapted to receive the matter to be transmitted. The extension 8 of the body 5 is gummed at 11, and after the matter has been placed within the envelop, the extension 8 is moistened, folded inwardly and secured by pressure to the inner side of the body 1. The sealing flap 4 of the main envelop can then be closed and sealed in the ordinary manner.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it will be observed that the main envelop must not only be opened, but that the attachment within the envelop must be opened before the contents thereof can be removed. It may be possible to steam or use other means for opening the flap 4, but it is practicallyimpossible to steam or use any instruments whatsoever for removing the extension 8 of the attachment, and since the attachment is firmly secured within the envelop it is impossible to reach the contents of said attachment Without mutilating or disliguring the envelop to an extent that cannot escape detection.

The envelop and its attachment can be made of paper, paperoid, or any other durable material and of various sizes, either for ordinary mail purposes or for express use.

Vhile in the drawings We have illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that the construction thereof is susceptible to such changes as fall Within the scope of the appended claims.

What We claim, is:

l. The combination With an envelop having a body, end flaps, a bottom flap, and a sealing flap, of an attachment adapted to be placed in and secured to said envelop, said attachment comprising` a body-portion of the same shape as the body of the envelop, and extensions carried by said body-portion and foldable thereon and gummed on their outer faces for engagement with the inner face of the body of the envelop, a bottom extension carried by said body-portion and foldable thereon and upon said end extension and gummed on its outer face for securing it to the inner face of the body of the envelop, and an extension carried by the upper edge of said body-portion and corresponding in shape to the sealing flap of the envelop and foldable inwardly and having its outer face gummed for securing it to the inner face of the body of the envelop, said body-portion of said attachment gummed for securing it to the inner face of said bottom, end and sealing flaps of the envelop.

2. An attachment for envelope comprising a body-portion having its outer face gummed for securing it to the inner face of the end and bottom liaps of an envelop, end

extensions projecting from said body-portion and having the outer faces thereof gummed for securing them to the inner face of the body portion of the envelop, a bottom extension foldable upon the end extension and having its outer face gummed for securing it to the inner face of the bodyportion of an envelop, and a top extension projecting from said body-portion and having its outer face gummed for securing it to the inner face of the body-portion of an envelop.

3. An attachment for envelops comprising a body-portion corresponding in shape to the body of an envelop, a top extension projecting from the top of said body-portion and corresponding in contour to the sealing flap of an envelop and having its outer face gummed for securing it to the inner face of the body of an envelop, rectangular end and bottom extensions projecting from said body-portion, said end extensions foldable upon said body-portion and said botto-m extensions foldable upon said end extensions, said end and bottom extensions having their outer faces gummed for securing them to the inner face of the body of an envelop, said body-portion having a part of its outer face gummed for securing it to the bottom and end iaps of an envelop.
