“You’ve got these cute animals, and you’ve got a forest, and you’ve got this robot, all these adorable elements. And if we had made the film in traditional CG style, I was absolutely sure it would play too young,” Sanders says of the DreamWorks film.

Visual effects supervisor Pablo Helman says it’s a testament to the “importance of collaboration” for the ambitious project that combined massive practical sets with alluring CG work.

The movie, which will be released in the U.S. by Paramount on Dec. 25, depicts the former member of the popular boy band Take That as a very expressive chimpanzee — thanks to motion-capture and CG work by Wētā FX.

He explains that three-dimensional CG modeling creates very precise geometry onscreen.
