By dumping more toxic substances into the landfills, there’s a higher chance of chemicals leaking into groundwater or becoming part of airborne dust blowing into nearby communities.

The city's residents and businesses generate an estimated 2,500 tonnes of waste every day, half of which ends up in dumping sites across the city - the biggest being Kiteezi.

At least 16 helicopters are also being used, with images showing the aircraft dumping water onto the smouldering hills.

Industry experts say this is not just fly-tipping, but "organised crime" where "networks of people" are illegally collecting and dumping waste.

The demonstration Saturday was organized by Protect Calabasas, which also plans to seek an injunction to halt dumping of fire debris at the landfill while the issue moves through the courts.
