Costume designer Paul Tazewell widened the stage show’s scope to design for hundreds of extras while creating distinct looks for not only the movie’s two leads, but an assortment of tertiary characters as well.

For some, that starts with addressing the colloquial term for background actors — “extras” — which some bristle at.

For instance, during one sequence set in the Waves’ arena tunnels, she noted there weren’t enough extras dressed to look like the VIPs that would be wandering around.

"It sounds cheesy to say, but we're all supporting actors. I get it, the big parts go to leads, smaller parts go to day players and extras, but we all support each other."
