Nearly two-thirds of voters polled wanted to provide greater funding for city and county fire departments even if that meant raising taxes.

She said she is trying to match fire victims with nonprofits that can offer funding to help people keep their land.

With a budget of £960m, it has taken over responsibility for funding and regulating universities, further education and training as well as school sixth forms.

"Each year, we estimate the funding needed to cover scheduled works and maintenance and share budgets with our homeowners in advance," a spokesperson said.

And a relatively small percentage of funding for primary and secondary schools - about 13% - comes from federal funds.
