Israel now hopes the US can advance a plan for a two-month truce extension, which would start with the release of about half of the living hostages still held.

The UK sources say that last week the prime minister's National Security Adviser, Jonathan Powell, worked with his US counterpart Mike Waltz, and German and French officials, to fashion a plan for a ceasefire and the steps that might follow.

These cash assistance grants are meant to provide immediate relief, “while the County and City of Los Angeles, along with federal, state, local and community partners, plan for the long-term economic recovery and resiliency of those impacted,” officials said.

It follows a decision by the UK government not to continue with a £35m action plan for the river announced by the Conservatives before the election, but to develop its own proposals.

On a visit to Windermere in Cumbria he said the government was "committed to cleaning up this iconic lake" as part of its Plan for Change scheme, which aims to upgrade crumbling water infrastructure using private investment.
