The backlash to Musk's smash-and-grab of the federal government has moved beyond Wall Street tickers into the real world.

"No-one really speaks about it. Everyone is slightly ashamed about it. It's all behind closed doors. It doesn't really spill out into the real world. It's very secretive," he said.

"I feel like it saved my life, because I was so high, like I'm not in the real world," she told me.

"I played with Colombia, I played with England. I was at Palace for 10 years. I was pretty sure I'd get a club, easily, but then I got exposed to the real world, quickly."

He said the loneliness of being a sole carer made him feel he had "lost contact with the real world".
