In February, the Supreme Court rejected an unusual intervention from the government, which was worried huge amounts of redress payments could upset the car market and make it less competitive.

According to the most recent figures, in the scheme created to provide redress for those in the original Group Litigation Order, 227 of 492 eligible claimants are still waiting for full and final compensation.

"With this return, we are contributing to the redress of a historical injustice that is still felt today," said Dutch Minister of Culture, Education, and Science Eppo Bruins, reports the AFP news agency.

Separate to the Truth Recovery exercise, Stormont's Executive Office has proposed a redress scheme for people who spent time in mother-and-baby homes.

The government said last month that, while it wanted to make sure customers get redress, it also wanted the motor sector to be able to continue "supporting millions of motorists to own vehicles".
