Fashion stylist and CEO of clothing brand Mermaid Way, Julia Pukhalskaia, calls the choice to wear revealing dresses a "provocative statement", but says it's a "way to reclaim the right to govern one's body".

So to keep costs low, it says an increasing number of salons are opting to rent chairs instead of employing stylists to avoid paying the tax.

"I know stylists who work in music who lost their houses, who had costumes and whatnot. I know musicians who are born and raised in LA who lost their house."

But stylists and clients alike shared that community-organized support like the Dena Strong hair event left them feeling blessed and rejuvenated in spite of the tragedy.

But also to the hotel workers, florists, restaurants, construction crews, cab drivers, stylists, seamstresses, rental companies, cleaners — the number of people required to mount, oversee and break down these enormous events is incalculable.
