Hazel told BBC News NI she had "never come across" a talking newspaper until she started volunteering more than 30 years ago.

That’s when Bryant, whose organization’s volunteers help people live more harmoniously with bears, gets a call from someone wanting to know how to make the bear stop coming around.

Ahead of a Tuesday hearing for HB 3457, the group mobilized more than 750 people to email or call legislators with opposition to the bill and confirmed some 40 volunteers to testify before the legislature.

The memorial is maintained by a group of volunteers who rely on public donations.

Rue Furch, a Sonoma State University student, signed on as a volunteer for Proposition 20, which called for a commission to “preserve, protect, restore, and enhance the environment and ecology of the coastal zone.”
