We do not tolerate harassment of conference participants in any form. Explicitly or implicitly sexual language and imagery are not appropriate for any conference venue, including talks, workshops, parties, Twitter, and other online media.
Harassment includes but is not limited to any behavior that a reasonable person would find intimidating, hostile or offensive, such as: lewd, boisterous, overtly sexual comments, obscene gestures, sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, demeaning or discriminatory behavior, materials, and speech, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, unwelcome sexual attention, objectionable tweets/comments/utterances online, violence, threats of violence, or violent behaviour or language directed at another person, wearing clothing that is not suitable for a professional work environment, that is provocative, or otherwise potentially offensive, sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language, personal insults and offensive verbal comments or slurs related to gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof), nationality, political beliefs, and/or technology choices.
Participants asked to stop any harassing behaviour are expected to comply immediately.
Attendees, exhibitors, sponsors, speakers, and WiDS Zürich staff are also subject to the anti-harassment policy. In particular, sponsors should not use sexualized images, activities, or other material. Booth staff (including volunteers) should not use sexualized clothing/uniforms/costumes or otherwise create a sexualized environment.
Photography
We encourage attendees to take and share their photographs, as long as the person taking the photo respects others’ expressed wishes. Photography/recording shouldn’t be done covertly or against people’s wishes. If someone does not want their photo taken, don’t take their photo. We encourage you to ask permission before taking photographs or making any kind of recordings of individuals or small groups.
WiDS Zürich has photographers on staff and they will also abide by these policies during the conference. We sometimes use photos of attendees to promote future conferences. If you don’t want images of yourself to be published, you can opt-out by contacting [email protected].
Please do not take photos or records for commercial purposes without the expressed consent of conference planners.
Other unacceptable behaviour includes possession of any item that can be used as a weapon and may cause danger to others, drinking alcohol outside designated areas (please drink responsibly), possession or use of any illegal substance, assembling for the purpose of, or resulting in, disturbing the peace, or committing any unlawful act or engaging in any offensive behaviour, smoking other than in designated areas, and failure to obey any rules or regulations of the conference venue(s).
Action
If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns about other unacceptable or worrisome behaviour, and you feel comfortable speaking with the offender, please inform the offender that they have affected you negatively. Oftentimes, the offending behaviour is unintentional, and the accidental offender and offended will resolve the incident by having that initial discussion. However, WiDS Zürich recognizes that harassment is not about the intent of the alleged offender, it is about how the behaviour can reasonably be interpreted. WiDS Zürich further recognizes that there are many reasons why speaking directly to the offender may not be workable for you. If you don’t feel comfortable speaking directly with the offender for any reason, seek out a conference staff member. Staff members will be wearing distinctive uniforms.
If a participant engages in harassing behaviour, the conference organizers may take any action they deem appropriate, including warning the offender or expulsion from the conference, with no refund.
If you need help with a harassment problem, your own or someone else’s (including suspicion of harassment), please email us at [email protected] or contact a member of the staff immediately. Any such reports will be treated confidentially.
The WiDS Zürich team will investigate all reported incidents with discretion and respect for the privacy of all parties. Conference staff will be happy to help participants contact hotel/venue security or local law enforcement, provide escorts, or otherwise assist those experiencing harassment to feel safe for the duration of the conference. We value your attendance.
We expect participants to follow these rules at conference, workshop venues and conference-related social events. WiDS Zürich reserves the right to bar anyone from participating in the conference or connected events without any refund.
