District Collector Ch. Nagarani has asked floriculture scientists and progressive farmers to identify suitable waterbodies to explore the potential for the cultivation of ‘Phool Makhana’ (Lotus seeds) in West Godavari district.

The farmers, scientists and other stakeholders here on Wednesday gathered for a training session on the cultivation of high-valued flower varieties and value-added products, export and domestic market opportunities.

Addressing the gathering, Ms. Nagarani has assured five-year term loans for various floriculture crops. “The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and District Rural Development Authority will extend assistance for jasmine cultivation and 50% of subsidy will be offered for poly house construction, with maximum aid of ₹16 lakh per acre”.

“In the West Godavari district, the orchid varieties are in great demand, with each flower’s price ranging from ₹30 to ₹150. High-valued flower varieties are also in great demand in the market,” said Ms. Nagarani. The Andhra Pradesh State, where floriculture spreads over 19,000 hectares, is India’s third-largest flower producer, she claimed.

Principal Scientist D.V.S. Raju, Regional Centre of Directorate of Floriculture (Vemagiri), Scientists of Horticulture Research Centre, Kovvur, and farmers discussed on various issues including the cultivation of high-valued flower varieties.
