Lady Gaga finds inspiration for songwriting with her fiancé Michael Polansky.

In an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music released on Wednesday, March 5, the "Abracadabra" singer spoke songwriting and how her engagement played a sweet role in writing the song "Blade of Grass," which will be on her album Mayhem, releasing on Friday.

"As a songwriter you need life to inspire your writing and if everything is promotion, then I'll write about promotion and I won't write about that special moment I shared with you where Michael asked me how I would want him to propose to me one day," Gaga, 38, explained.

"We were in our backyard and I said, 'Just take a blade of grass and wrap it around my finger.' And then I wrote 'Blade of Grass' because I remembered the way his face looked and I remembered the grass in the backyard and I remember thinking he should use that really long grass that's in the center of the backyard."

Polansky wound up proposing to Gaga with a stunning oval diamond engagement ringon April Fool's Day.

"Those moments, to me, at a certain point I was into the idea of fame and artifice and being the conductor of your own life when it came to your own inner sense of fame," Gaga continued on Apple Music.

"I had to fight a lot harder to make music and dance a little bit later into my career because my life became so different, that I didn't have as much life around me to inspire me."

The "Die with a Smile" singer said that she assumed fans were wondering where she was and why she wasn't promoting anything. "But I needed to go live life to have a full life and also to give back to my true gift," she explained.

Gaga then spoke about she considers "one of the sweetest things" Polansky told her as her partner.

"He was like, 'You who you are is that you're an artist. That's the thing that makes you the most happy, so we need to nurture that part of you,' " she recalled. "He reminded me that the other stuff was maybe sometimes hard for me and making it more difficult, so keeping me away from what I love."

Gaga and Polansky were first romantically linked in 2020 and got engaged in early 2024.

A source told PEOPLE in July that they had been engaged for months. "The couple shared the happy news with family and close friends right away, but wanted to keep the engagement private otherwise," the insider said.

"Everyone’s excited about them getting married," the source added, saying that Gaga was "the happiest" with Polansky. "They’re great together. He’s excited and supportive of her career. He can’t stand being in the spotlight, but lets her shine. He has his own business priorities that she’s supportive of."
