The proposed https://lnkd.in/ePPywuYS shared O-RU spectrum sharing framework is applicable to sharing between spectrum users including public, private, and government. Additionally, it is radio technology agnostic, i.e., not all of the cooperating systems need to deploy the same 3GPP radio technology versions, and non-3GPP radio technologies can potentially be accommodated using the same O-RAN Open Fronthaul-based shared O-RU mechanisms. Shared O-RU with spectrum sharing feature can create opportunities for new spectrum for the next generation networks. In addition, it can lead to sustainability improvements and reduction to CapEx and OpEx for operators. Below is shown an example (referencing O-RAN paper shared O-RU) above of spectrum O-RU sharing between 5G RAT and Non-3GPP RAT (B2X) Broadcast 2 Everything a new RAT aligned 3GPP for Interworking has been studied for two years is now starting the standard process 2024. https://lnkd.in/eQmX8NFJ Further research is needed on O-RAN architecture and procedures for spectrum sharing. New applicable deployment scenarios should be analyzed and considered. Shared O-RU spectrum sharing may be facilitated either by an operator that “owns” spectrum or by third party. Shared O-RUs extended to facilitate spectrum sharing have the potential to improve sustainability, with reduced energy consumption, and reduced CapEx and OpEx for all operators. A “neutral host” like deployment of an O-RU can support shared use from multiple independent O-DUs accessed dynamically via standardized fronthaul interfaces. This can support differentiation between operators. In addition, it retains for MNOs and Private Networks alike all of the cloud-based, complete, centralized control capabilities of the Open RAN system. This includes all of the functionality of the O-DU, O-CU, RIC, and advanced network automation capabilities inherent in the O-RAN architecture. https://lnkd.in/gA9jzktQ A report, conducted with Edison Research, is highlighting the continued benefits of traditional #radio in national ad campaigns. With its combination of #trust, #reach, and #affordability, AM/FM remains a valuable asset to build credibility and long-term consumer relationships. According to the Just Add Audio Report, 64% of Americans aged 13 and older listen to radio monthly, making it a key medium for reaching diverse audiences. Not only does radio offer extensive reach, but it remains one of the most trusted media sources, with 37% of respondents expressing trust in its information – just behind podcasts at 40%. In comparison, only 31% of respondents said they trusted broadcast TV. While good news, this is a more muted result compared to a Morning Consult survey earlier this year showing AM/FM trust has risen from 60% to 63% over the past four years, surpassing the 55% overall media credibility among US adults in 2023. Advertising perceptions and spot load remain a challenge for many media platforms, but radio fares better than TV. While 49% of listeners felt that AM/FM had too many ads -similar to online audio services – 63% of respondents found broadcast TV to be overloaded with commercials. Additionally, 54% of respondents are willing to listen to ads on the radio if it keeps content affordable, slightly ahead of the 51% who said the same for TV. The report underscores the unique strengths of radio, particularly its ability to engage listeners during screen-free moments, such as commutes and work. These uninterrupted periods of engagement provide brands with targeted access to audiences during critical decision-making times. SiriusXM Media found that combining digital audio options with traditional radio increases incremental reach by 18 points, boosting the combined reach to 82% of Americans. This makes radio, when paired with digital audio, one of the most effective tools for integrated media campaigns. SiriusXM also highlights how audio amplifies cultural moments without the high costs associated with television, offering an affordable yet impactful option for marketers. The Just Add Audio Report conducted 3,000 online interviews with US residents aged 13 and older between May and June, with data weighted to reflect the US population’s sex, age, and ethnicity demographics. Over the weekend, James Cridland posted an article highlighting the recent data showing that #streaming of AM/FM (not #radio writ large) has overtaken OTA in the UK. It's an interesting read that sheds light on the nuances of the situation given the deployment of DAB (a technology we do not rely on here in the US.) What does this mean for #stations here in the US? We've seen a steady increase in the share of the audience consuming their favorite stations via the #digital stream over the last 5 years. In fact, some demographics now register over 25% of their listening of #AM/FM radio through digital streaming platforms. Radio’s Decline: How Streaming and Podcasts Are Changing the Game Terrestrial radio, once the dominant force in audio broadcasting, is rapidly losing ground as streaming platforms, satellite radio, and podcasts redefine how audiences consume content. The FCC’s latest report paints a grim picture of the medium’s struggle to stay relevant in a digital-first world. The FCC’s 2024 Communications Marketplace Report outlines the challenges facing terrestrial radio amid an evolving audio landscape: • Streaming platforms: Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music collectively boast over 550 million active subscribers globally, with Spotify alone surpassing 220 million paid users in 2024. • Satellite radio: SiriusXM added 1.2 million new subscribers last year, growing its base to over 36 million. • Podcasts: More than 3 million podcasts are now available across platforms, with 464.7 million monthly listeners worldwide, contributing to a $2.1 billion podcast ad market. • Digital aggregators: Platforms like TuneIn and iHeartRadio attract over 70 million monthly users, blending traditional radio with on-demand flexibility. By the numbers: • Audience decline: Terrestrial radio’s weekly reach dropped to 82% of U.S. adults in 2024, down from 89% in 2019. • Revenue loss: Advertising revenue for terrestrial radio fell by 11% year-over-year, now standing at $11.4 billion, compared to $19 billion a decade ago. • Demographic gap: Among Americans aged 18-34, streaming platforms capture 75% of audio listening time, compared to just 12% for terrestrial radio. • Car market impact: In-car radio usage declined by 14% in 2024, driven by the adoption of connected car dashboards featuring apps like Spotify and Apple Podcasts. The big picture: • Advertising shifts: Digital audio ad spend grew by 16% last year, reaching $8.2 billion, while terrestrial radio saw its share dwindle to just 8% of total audio ad revenue. • Generational changes: Millennials and Gen Z increasingly favor on-demand audio, with 68% citing the ability to skip ads and customize playlists as a major factor. • Technological advancements: The rapid adoption of smart speakers—now in 37% of U.S. households—further cements streaming as the preferred audio source. Zoom out: Community stations and talk radio maintain influence in specific markets, but overall trends signal a steep decline for terrestrial radio. Efforts to modernize, including investments in HD radio and online simulcasting, have failed to reverse audience attrition. What’s next: As streaming giants continue to innovate with AI-driven music curation and immersive formats, terrestrial radio faces an existential threat. Consolidation in the industry is likely, with smaller players folding or being acquired by larger networks. Bottom line: Terrestrial radio’s audience and revenue are eroding at an alarming rate. Without bold innovations, the medium risks fading into obscurity, overshadowed by the rise of digital-first audio platforms.

Great article by Fabio Sonnati in Streaming Media Magazine outlining the increasingly complex nature of measuring perceived video quality. Traditional metrics, like VMAF, may serve well for a narrow set of use cases but quickly show their limits with modern codecs and AI enhancements. For instance, when assessing scenarios involving film grain synthesis or AI-based super-resolution, VMAF falls short, misinterpreting enhancements that align well with creative intent as degradation.   However, unlike VMAF, IMAX’s XVS metric rewards grain retention, lack of banding, and retention of detail, offering more consistent, perceptually aligned evaluations.    As someone who’s spent 18 years studying video quality, I’m excited to see our metric continue to evolve, ensuring accurate, actionable insights for the next era of video technology.   #VideoQuality #Innovation #AI IMAX Streaming and Consumer Technology

O2 introduces AI-powered ‘Granny’ to tackle fraud Virgin Media O2, UK-based telco, announced a groundbreaking tool to its fraud prevention efforts with the introduction of "Daisy," an AI-powered "Head of Scammer Relations." Daisy's role is to engage fraudsters in lengthy, human-like conversations, wasting their time and preventing them from targeting real victims. Trained in collaboration with YouTube scambaiter Jim Browning, Daisy is indistinguishable from a real person. Operating 24/7, she engages scammers in meandering conversations, sharing made-up stories and false personal details to mislead and frustrate them. In some cases, Daisy has managed to keep fraudsters on the line for up to 40 minutes, significantly reducing their capacity to scam others. Let me note that Amy Hart, a reality TV star and influencer, has joined the campaign after her own harrowing experience of losing over £5,000 to a scam. She praised Daisy’s efforts and urged people to stay cautious. “If you have even the slightest doubt, hang up and call back on a trusted number,” Hart advised. As supporting evidence, O2's research shows that 71% of Brits want to fight back against scammers, but over half (53%) avoid doing so to save their time. With nearly seven in ten people (67%) worried about being targeted and one in five (22%) facing fraud attempts weekly, Daisy is stepping in to take the fight to fraudsters. #o2 #Daisy #fraud #ai #artificialintelligence

Another study confirming the impact that audio advertising has when combined with digital campaigns. Uplift in reach, and as they occupy different levels in the consideration funnel there must also then be an uplift in conversion. Shifting digital only budgets tona combo budget is a better plan.
