In Espoo, an elderly couple died when their detached house burned down late on Friday evening.
A neighbour in the Lintuvaara district called the rescue department after seeing smoke and flames around 11 pm. When firefighters arrived the house was full of smoke and efforts to resuscitate the residents were unsuccessful. The flames were extinguished by 1 am.
Police suspect that the fire was started by an electric device in the living room.
Fire chief Riku Rantala said that there were no smoke detectors in the building.
Young man dies in Karvia crash
Early Saturday morning, a young man died in a car crash in Karvia, southwest Finland.
Two men aged around 20 were in the car when it went off a road at high speed around 4 am, snapping a streetlamp pole and a tree. The car was completely destroyed, but one of the men managed to escape and walk to a nearby house to seek help.
The other man died instantly. Police say it is not yet clear which of them was driving. The road was closed for about an hour.
Police officer hit by car in Porvoo
In Porvoo, east of Helsinki, a police officer was struck by a car while on duty late Friday evening. The officer was hospitalised after being hit by a speeder while monitoring traffic.
The driver was detained and could face charges including grievous bodily injury and endangering traffic.
"At this point it does not seem that the police officer was injured intentionally," Detective Superintendent Juhani Vuorisalo said, adding that the driver was not apparently intoxicated.
The case has been handed over to Helsinki Police for investigation.
Window shattered by gunshot in Iisalmi
Meanwhile police in eastern Finland are investigating a shooting incident in Iisalmi.
Around 3.30 am, police were alerted to shots being fired in the town's Lippuniemi neighbourhood.
The shooter fled in a car after shooting in through an apartment window. There were people in the flat at the time. Police say the suspected shooter is in custody, along with the likely weapon.
