Pictures obtained by Yle from the al-Hol refugee camp in Syria show tents blanketed in snow.
This image was taken in front of a tent inhabited by a Finnish woman. Her relative in Finland forwarded the image to Yle on Thursday.
Eleven Finnish women and their 30 children are living in the camp, where thousands of relatives of Isis combatants are being held. At the end of last year, Finland’s Foreign Ministry repatriated two Finnish children from the camp.
On Friday, another Finnish woman living at the camp told Yle the snow had yet to melt and that the tents were not designed to withstand snow.
"It’s really cold. The children are freezing. Luckily I don't have babies," the woman wrote in a message from the camp.
The women use kerosene heaters to warm the tents.
"We try to keep the heaters on all the time," the woman added.
She also said children at the camp had only recently received winter clothes and shoes.
Rojava Information Center (RIC), a volunteer group in northeastern Syria, also shared pictures of snow at al-Hol.
This week the Middle East has seen an unusual amount of snow, with the white stuff blanketing Iraqi capital Baghdad for the first time since 2008.
