Left Alliance chair and Member of Parliament Li Andersson had a baby girl at Turku University Hospital this week, the education minister, now on leave, said on Instagram.

"The world's most wonderful creature arrived this week...and we’re the happiest people in the world," Andersson posted on the image-sharing platform.

Last September Andersson announced that she was expecting a child with her domestic partner, former ice hockey player Juha Pursiainen.

MP Jussi Saramo took over as education minister in December after Andersson requested a leave of absence from the post for the duration of her parental leave.

Andersson has said she intends to take parental leave from tasks related to the party's chairmanship and media appearances ahead of the spring’s municipal elections, requesting the party’s other deputy chairs take over those duties as required.
