Left Alliance MPs have elected Jussi Saramo to lead the parliamentary group of the party, at its summer meeting in Vaasa.

The 43-year-old will succeed Paavo Arhinmäki, who takes up a new job as Deputy Mayor of Helsinki.

"The parliamentary group had a good-spirited meeting. It is an easy start to this post," Saramo said, adding that "this is not the first time I have stepped into Paavo's shoes."

Both Arhinmäki and Saramo have chaired the party's youth wing.

The first-term MP from Uusimaa is currently serving as the first vice-chair of the party. He has most recently covered Li Andersson as Minister of Education during her maternity leave between December and June.
