UMTS Network Opens to Customers

Service provider Telia Sonera has inaugurated its third-generation mobile phone network in twenty Finnish cities.

The network has been switched on, for instance, in the metropolitan Helsinki region, Kuopio, Vaasa, Oulu and Rovaniemi.

Permits for UMTS networks in Finland were among the first to be granted in the world. However, delays have occured in bringing them on-line along with a shortage of suitable phones.

Sonera hopes to attract tens of thousands of subscribers for its UMTS network services by the end of next year.

The faster UMTS network allows, for example, video calls. However, phones transmitting direct video calls are not yet available in Finland.
