Internet Ozone Layer Service Opened

The Finnish Meteorological Institute has opened an internet service giving real-time data on the thickness of the ozone layer and on UV-radiation levels.

Net pages present maps showing the distribution of the ozone layer across the Nordic area and the level of harmful ultra-violet radiation.

The data comes from the EOS-Aura satellite equipped with Finnish and Dutch atmospheric sampling instruments. The data is visible within 15 minutes of the satellite's overflight.

UV-radiation levels are affected by the ozone layer, clouds, snow cover and other atmospheric particles.
