Russian Students in Seinäjoki to Keep Monthly Stipend

Russian students at the Seinäjoki Vocational Educational Centre will continue to receive extra support from the school, despite an earlier move to do away with the added monthly stipends.

The school board says that additional monthly pocket money and meal benefits will be given to Russians from the school's development budget. This adds up to around 350,000 euros over the next three years.

Earlier this year, the Seinäjoki Centre (Sedu) said that extra benefits paid by the Härmänmaa Professional Institute to its Russian students would be abolished when the Härmänmaa school merged with Sedu. This caused an uproar among the students, which was largely supported by the Seinäjoki public.

Sedu is home to 111 Russian students.

Sedu announced on Monday it would retain the extra stipends. The vocational school has also decided to increase mentoring and language instruction for foreign students. Sedu also plans to establish a committee to keep tabs on the wellbeing and academic progress of all its foreign students.
