Finns say “I do on once-in-a-century wedding day

Today's 11-11-11 date is drawing couples in Finland to tie the knot on a day that will make remembering anniversaries easy.

Parishes around the country are staging special events to marry multiple couples in one ceremony. For example in Tampere, four couples will be introduced to holy matrimony at 7pm in Alexander Church, where couples are being married every 30 minutes on Friday.

The Perkkaa Chapel in Espoo is cementing unions non-stop from 7am to 9pm.

Local register offices are also busy on Friday and many are fully booked. The local register office in Hämeenlinna will set a record on Friday by carrying out 18 civil marriage ceremonies in one day.

The 11th day of the 11th month of 2011 is also luring couples to less formal venues. That said, a drive-through chapel has been set up in a parking garage In Helsinki’s Kannelmäki neighbourhood.
