Nokia Veteran Named as YLE's New Director

Lauri Kivinen was appointed as the new Director General of the Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE) on Thursday. He takes over from Mikael Jungner whose term wraps up at the end of April.

YLE's Board of Directors decided unanimously on the selection on Thursday afternoon. Lauri Kivinen, 48, is now Head of Corporate Affairs, Nokia Siemens Networks. He has worked for NSN and Nokia since 1988. His past positions include Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications at Nokia.

Kivinen, who holds a Master of Business Sciences degree from the Turku School of Economics, is married and has three children.

During the selection process for the new director, the board considered dozens of outside candidates for the post, who were chosen by a recruitment firm.

"We were looking for a professional manager for YLE who could take this modern public-service company successfully into the future," said board chairman Kari Neilimo.

He said that the decision was made based on Kivinen's "broad leadership experience in the communications sector, cosmopolitanism and stakeholder know-how".
