The number of college and university students was up by over 8% while there were 14% more vocational students studying abroad in 2009 than during the previous year.

About two-thirds of these students went to other European countries to study. The popularity of studies in Europe has steadily decreased in recent years while studying in Asia has become more popular.

Foreign students down

Fewer international exchange students came to Finland to study. Many of those who did come took part in study programmes in northern parts of the country.

Colleges and universities had close to 8800 foreign students registered last year, and vocational training institutions around 2400.
