Ministry: Finnish Hostages Freed Safely in Nigeria

The Finnish Foreign Ministry says two Finns kidnapped on Wednesday in Nigeria are safe after an army rescue in which one hostage was killed and another seriously injured.

The Finns were among a group of seven foreign oil workers taken hostage in a raid on an oil production vessel off the Nigerian coast. About 10 gunmen in speedboats attacked the Italian-owned vessel some 55 kilometres offshore from Port Harcourt.

The Italian oil company Eni said the other hostages were from Europe and the Philippines. Such kidnappings are common in the area. Hostages are generally released unharmed after ransoms are paid.
