Public Prefers Tuomioja to Heinäluoma, Niinistö to Katainen

The Social Democratic Party is trying desperately to re-claim the post of Prime Minister, but the party is at odds with the public over who among the ranks is the best candidate for the office.

MP Eero Heinäluoma is head of the party, and therefore the top contender for premier should the SDP win the most votes.

But according to a poll commissioned by the newspaper Aamulehti, only 24 percent of the public think he’s the SDP’s best candidate for head of state. The most popular choice is veteran politician, former journalist and current Minister for Foreign Affairs, Erkki Tuomioja, who received 38 percent support.

Katainen Also Distant Second

The same poll showed that the public is also less impressed with National Coalition Party chair Jyrki Katainen as his party’s choice for prime minister. Sauli Niinistö, charismatic former party chairman and Vice President of the European Investment Bank, was three times as popular as Katainen.

The poll was carried out by Taloustutkimus, who interviewed a thousand people for the data.
