Radiation Experts Warn of Solarium Health Risks

Finland’s Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority has joined its Nordic counterparts in issuing a warning against repeated solarium use. Authorities stress that too much exposure can significantly raise the risk of skin cancer.

In a joint statement to European solarium manufacturers and standardisation authorities, Nordic experts stress that people under the age of 18 as well as those with sensitive skin should not use tanning beds at all.

Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and Icelandic radiation authorities are calling for greater control and a tightening of solarium restrictions across Europe. They want all tanning salons to follow Nordic limits on the amount of UV radiation used in tanning beds, as well as on the length and frequency of tanning sessions.

Their joint statement points out that it is dangerous to use solariums which have a light intensity greater than the sun in tropical areas.
