London Hosts Three Months of Sibelius

Finland's "national composer" Jean Sibelius will be the subject of an unprecedented three-month festival in London this autumn.

The Finnish Institute in London is arranging the 'Sibelius and Beyond' festival, which will include performances of the Finnish master's work by many leading orchestras.

The series, which stretches from mid-September until early December, will feature concerts by the Los Angeles Philharmonic with guest soloist Karita Mattila as well as the prize-winning young quartet Meta4.

The latter will perform along with baritone Jorma Hynninen, pianist Ilkka Paananen and cellist Tuomas Ylinen at a commemorative concert at Wigmore Hall on September 20th, marking the fiftieth anniversary of the composer's death.

The "Beyond" part of the festival will spotlight work by contemporary Finnish composers such as Kaija Saariaho, Aulis Sallinen and Einojuhani Rautavaara.
