Sports Minister Concerned About Recreational Doping

Minister of Culture and Sport Stefan Wallin is concerned about the apparent increase in the use of doping in recreational fitness training. He writes in a column for the daily Turun Sanomat that this has become a real health problem.

Wallin believes that doping is far more prevalent in amateur circles than among professional athletes. He says that the issue is simply not talked about, and has largely been overshadowed by doping scandals in professional sports.

He adds that he believes more youth are turning to doping agents in order to get the physique they desire, rather than for any performance-enhancing effects. Wallin draws parallels between early use of doping agents and illegal drugs - both, he says, can lead to addiction and other problems.
