The intense chlorination effort in the town of Nokia aimed at eliminating intestinal bacteria and viruses has reportedly succeeded. However, officials say that it will not be until early next month that municipal water in Nokia can be used normally.
A mishap at the town's water works in late November caused the contamination of the water supply with treated sewage.
Many residents came down with stomach ailments, and emergency measures were taken to distribute clean drinking water throughout the city.
If the flash chlorination has succeeded in getting rid of the microbes, the chlorine itself still needs to be flushed out of the system before the water is seen as safe to drink.
